    Lappy for some.

Wanted to check knowledge base here on GT.
Took R50e to laptop repair place.
    Spent $85.
They said new motherboard at $350.

I will start with suggestion given here to reload drivers for USBs.
Then move to slot card with USB ports.
    Then give up.
    And use trackball.

You know, it's not that I'm butt-hurt that you didn't take the advice for the free and cheap fixes offered by several people in the previous thread ...

I find it incredibly odd, however, that you chose the most expensive and time consuming route as the first way to go.

That's an interesting paradigm you've got going on there ...

Hope the drivers work (I'm not hopeful though knowing what I do about the Lenovo USB hub's power) if not, I hope the PCMCIA card works for you.

I just have trouble wrapping my head around you spending 85 dollars before trying to update the drivers or buying the external ports ... maybe cause I'm cheap.

By the way, here's the motherboard for your system for 124 bucks: http://www.getpartsonline.com/27r2076.html ETA: this is a generic example, if you give me the machine type I can point you to the exact one it'll be a 7 digit alpha-numeric number on the bottme sticker like 27R-2076 or 27R2-076
I do apprciate you re-inforcing my aversion to local shops when it comes to laptop repair ... 350 ... sheesh.

    Hi!
Just wanted to see what would happen.
Bought 250 rounds of 5.7x28 anyhow.

I thought the cheap routes would work.
    Thanks.

Will have tried all but re-format of drive when done.
Everyone will be happy I tried their suggestions...
    Lappy...:tongueout:

Money is no problem for me.

Ma'am, just shoot the danged thing.

Reformatting and re-installed the operating system will accomplish little. If the USB ports worked before and the drivers weren't modified, why do we believe re-installing the entire operating system ... which will use the same drivers ... is a good idea?

Might could be that your southbridge has or is failing.
Is the built-in Ethernet port functioning correctly?

    Hey Tous!!
We can shoot it with the new 5.7.
You are correct, the ethernet port is belly up.
    Wireless still works.
It is my #2 back up travel lappy.
AS long as the wireless and iTunes/iPod functions work, I will drag it around.

When those fail it can swim the river.
#1 will got to travel status and...

A New lappy will be in my furture.

Only scenario I could fathom is if Windows update went nanners and screwed up the drivers.. but I agree w/ you. Sounds like the motherboard if its the USB and the Ethernet port. I'm not to optimistic the card will work, but it might.

I guess as long as wireless works, I guess you can use it for what you want to do(sync the ipod and surf).. so sounds like it should be OK for now. Is the optical drive working?

One of the guys in my son's dorm has a one-year old Dell Inspiron he wants to sell for $100 (got a MacBook for Christmas).

But no, that would be wrong....

For notebooks, the display generally fails first, followed by the keyboard. A motherboard that has been reliable for years is generally reliable when you junk the thing.

As the USB and Ethernet ports don't function, lappy isn't worth a 5.7, 10mm or .45 ACP.

Best put it out of it misery with a 9mm Kurz. I'd call Elsie Pea to do the deed.

I was reading about the USB port problems in laptops of the same model as yours last night and I noticed that people reported that other things started to malfunction after the USB ports went until the computers quit working.

Well, yeah, if you start shooting the laptop when the USB port goes out you're bound to develop other problems.

T'were it me, I'd go to a gun show, buy me a surplus LAW (you can get them ... NBC said you could,) set the misbehaving notebook in a Toyota and ... wait ... there's room for a hippie socialist ... maybe two in there yet. Maybe a couple of Taurus revolvers.
