so of the top your head, what’s your pick between the Intel core duo (T2600) or the Pentium M (770)?

or another way to ask this question is: what the newest an/or best laptop processor out?

Single core processors will soon cease to be manufactured. Go with the Core Duo.

In my opinion, the Core Duos are the best laptop processors out right now.

Core Duo is newer, and better, for the most part. The Pentium M will run cooler, have better battery life, (all else equal) and some of the things they had to change for the dual core will make the Pentium M a few percentage points faster at some few, very specific things.

But overall, dual-core is where everything is heading. If you're spending the $$ on new, get Core Duo. The premium for the T2600 vs. say a T2400 is about $250, which isn't very good value for a measley 333MHz...

Definitely go with Core Duo. Pentium M is on the way out, AMD's Turion lags behind in everything except that it's 64bit, and we won't talk about Via's or Transmeta's offerings; purely niche in the low power market.

I say go with the dual core processor as well. Acer has laptop with dual core processor for less than $1,000 with a DVD burner, XP Pro, 120GB HD and 1GB of RAM. It’s $999.99, but still less than $1000.
