Last night I caught a few minutes of Southland. Two uniformed LAPD officers entered a house with their guns drawn.

One had a Glock, the other had something else (Beretta maybe)?

Was this a TV production error, or do departments (or LAPD specifically) allow uniformed officers to choose their sidearm? I thought all were issued the same gun.

AFAIK, they are issued the Beretta, but are authorized several models of Glocks in 9mm, .40, and .45 as well as certain 1911s. The alternate weapons require a transition course, though.

Many of the large agencies are not standardized, they give options with the proper training.

I know at one point, NYPD was giving their officers a choice between (IIRC) Sig, Glock, and S&W. That may have changed. The last time I worked with them was in 2000 at a UN detail.

I have seen somebody using a 3rd generation S&W (all metal) semiauto, as well.

It's funny that you brought this up. My son and I watched that show too. He mentioned the fact that one guy had a Glock and the other had a Beretta during that scene.

The show has it right. As I understand it, Glocks are now standard issue, but they have the option of additional training to carry 1911's or DA/SA's (3rd Gen S&W or Beretta)

Current LAPD academy graduates are issued G22s. After probation they may choose to carry (privately purchased) Glocks chambered in 9mm, 40, and .45. They may also attend Beretta/de-cocker pistol training and carry a Beretta which was the previously issued sidearm.

I'm not sure if newer officers can carry a DA/SA S&W of if this is a grandfathered thing. If they can, they'd have to attend training. 1911s can be carried after a pretty formal training program.
