So I haven’t seen a thread on this yet; if so I apologize. But LAPD is transitioning to FN 509 MRD-LE. Interesting to see them go with something other than the usual Glock, S&W M&P, or Sig P320. I have no time behind an FN 509.

Thoughts?

From I understand, the FN 509 will be the authorized pistol for new recruits while those already on the streets will be allowed to maintain their current sidearms. And the recruits, once graduated, can switch to any of the still authorized pistols (and visa versa, old cops can switch to the FN 509).

The more choices, the better. Especially if the LAPD armorer will provide support!

Yes choices are good. Issuing a single handgun to the entire department is just plain dumb. I have been mandated to carry the issue pistol on duty my entire 18 year career. And I don’t have options other than G19 or 17.

The fire control block is a package and one is advised to not take it apart. You can polish things here and there to smooth it out, but stay out of the package. I have pretty extensive history with the FNS/509. The 509 is an improvement somewhat. The triggers do shoot in pretty nice. They also vary a little just like any mass produced product of this type.

While very limited in comparison to Glock for aftermarket support, there has been a slow growing market. Sights, mag extensions, strikers and alike are available.

About the fire control block, you can take it apart and tune it. Get springs and such. But when you mess it up, and you will. The replacement is ~$75.

I had a love hate relationship with the FNS/509. Frankly, if Glock was not an option I would more than likely go back to the platform. The gun INHO has a huge ergo advantage over Glock. Much closer to the feel of a 1911 than any striker I have played with to date.

All of the above stated, out of the 5 I had they all were very very solid. Absoulutly no issues.

LAPD’s firearms policy is broad in scope compared to other departments. They allow for carry a number of different handguns once off probation. Unless it has changed, even 1911’s are permitted with a stringent qualification course and that’s not only for special units, but even patrol.
