you can either take the zambales-pangasinan-la union route or the regular route via pampanga-tarlac-pangasinan-la union.

    zambales route:
pros: - light to no traffic/ (zambales side/light to heavy
    traffic in lingayen/dagupan)
    - travel time 4 to 5 hours
cons: - longer route (about 70 kms longer)
    - not advisable to travel at night since if you have
car troubles at night, service might be hard to get
    (zambales side)

    regular route:
pros: - safe to travel day/night
    - travel time 4 to 5 hours (depends on traffic
situation in Tarlac, Tarlac and Urdaneta)
    - shorter travel distance
cons: - traffic can get soooo bad in tarlac and urdaneta
    - ave. travelling speed is slower compared to zambales
    route

    my recommendation:
if you're travelling in the morning then by all means take the zambales route (since based on your handle, i gather you're coming from san marcelino?). You travel up north til Sta. Cruz then enter Infanta and make your way up until Dagupan City. From there you take the bonuan road til the junction in Damortis then proceed north (about 44 kms) til you reach San Fernando City.

However if you want to play it safe, or if you're travelling at night then take the regular route. from zambales proceed to the express hiway via olongapo-gapan road then head north and exit at Sta. Inez at the express hiway. from sta. inez proceed as you would go to baguio and when you reach the junction in Rosario, La Union, follow the main road (don't turn right towards kennon road or towards marcos hi way after that) until you reach San Fernando City (about 55 kms from Rosario).

    Hope this helps. :)

If you're traveling by day, then I second the suggestion of sundancekid to take the road less traveled.

If you still opt to pass by Urdaneta City, be prepared to navigate through major potholes along the highway. It's been raining hard here for the past few days because of typhoon Ester and the monsoon rains, and the asphalt highway couldn't stand up to the battering, particularly the area near the new Isuzu showroom.

After Urdaneta City, the road gets better, although there are still a few potholes you should look out for.

    Have a safe trip.
