Latest 1911 project: Converting a 9mm to 10mm. Since I always wanted a 1911 in 10mm, I got around to doing the conversion on a Kimber SS Target II originally configured in 9mm. Now, the breachface on this Kimber would accomodate a .40/10mm round, so that simplified things somewhat. Basically I just needed to fit a 10mm barrel and swap out the recoil spring. I chose a Jim Clark 6" barrel, opting for an increase in velocity over appearance since this is primarily a hunting gun. I selected a 22 lb recoil spring. In addition to the regular fitting of the hood and lower lugs, I also modified the Clark/Para ramp to fit the Kimber frame (Nowlin/Wilson style ramp). I don't have the frame jig necessary to hold the frame on my mini-mill to cut a C/P style rounded notch, so I just modified the barrel to fit the frame. While this reduced the amount of metal in the ramp/lug area by about .120", it should easily handle all the rounds I plan to shoot through it during my lifetime. Test firing in my 35' basement range proved it to be very accurate, but I need to sight it in at 50 yds. It only needed 3 clicks of right windage to put the holes on target dead on with the 9mm barrel. Quick and fun project. Now for the pic's:

Interesting! You didn't have to shorten the ejector?

if i thought there was an easy way (that was simple and didnt cost a mint) to convert my Kimber Gold Match .45acp to a 10mm i'd do it.

How does this work?? I thought the breech face would be a different size.

For a period of time, Kimber 9mm's came with a breechface wide enough to accommodate a .40 Dunno if that is still the case or when/if they ever changed the 9mm slide.

    nice man!

i too am curious about the ejector, about how far does the nose extend forward of the magazine well?

its my understanding that alot of the 10mm 1911s produced with extended ejectors dont really need them and in fact that they sometimes induce ejection issues and need to be reduced.

Some kids have been known to take a 9mm ejector and shorten for use with 10mm, but in 45ACP (and 45Super in my case) others have been known to use extended ejectors to kick brass out sooner. So, I guess there is a range which works. Good to know!
