My Ex called with a computer keyboard problem. She boots her computer to the Windows password screen. She can type in her password. Windows XP completes booting. The keyboard no longer works. Changed the keyboard, same problem.

    Any ideas?

Hmm... odd. I would suggest logging into WinXP, go to the Control Panel and opening the Systems configuration thingy (what the hell do you call those things? Interface? Dialogs?)

In any case, there will be a tab labelled Hardware. Once you click it, there is a button labeled Device Manager. Click on that.

The Device Manager will give you a list of all the hardware on your machine. Under Input Devices will be your keyboard. It may have a yellow flag next to it. Right-click on the keyboard and uninstall your keyboard.

Reboot. WinXP should detect the keyboard and reinstall the driver for it. It may help.

if it's a USB keyboard some require to be in a certain USB port.Usually the rear outer USB port. The one closest to the outside edge of the rear panel. The mouse should be in the inside rear USB port if it's an USB mouse.Try switching USB ports too_Often the front ports won't work properly with the keyboard.Otherwise check the connections.
