Just be wary of cheap bullet proof vests. I came from an orientation last Friday regarding bullet proof vests and I found out that there is a certain kind of material called xylon used on low end vest that does not work 100% when it comes to stopping bullets. Apparently, several companies that manufacture bullet proof vests are being sued because they used xylon.

Also, check if the vest has blunt trauma plates because the vest may stop the bullet but it may not control the impact of the bullet on the body which may also kill you.

I didn't know this but the vest has a shelf life. It is usually good up to 5 years. After that you could be in danger. But this can be fixed by replacing a certain component of high end vests. Can't remember which because I don't have my materials from the orientation here.

    FYI

The same model as mine will cost you over $700.00 without the trauma plate. I have a titanium insert to go with it which is another expense.

You should do a research on this model. I would be biased if I express my opinion.

I'd echo Jerry and strongly urge research.

The 'Second Chance' Monarch Summit IIA Butterfly Lite has undergone
NIJ 0101.04 standard testing, and the results are available online.

    ----

    Dino mentioned Zylon:
A year or two ago, 'Second Chance' filed for bankruptcy over
a product recall due to self-degrading acidity issues with the
    Kevlar-substitute 'Zylon' fabric it used:

    http://www.secondchance.com/zylon.asp

affecting a large number of its TriFlex, Ultimax and Ultima model
vests. Even tiny amounts of Zylon interwoven with Kevlar led to
    product failure in tests.

One must note that even Kevlar is subject to UV degradation, and
failure-inducing fiber-tension loss, if the vest is stored improperly
(plates inserted and on a hanger rather than laid flat in a box), and
subjected to unnecessary flexure. Creases are a no-no.

    ----

Bulletproof vests are indeed regulated. It's in Topacio.
HPC Circular No. 1 (27 April 1981) covers restrictions on import, sale and/or purchase.

The safety notices will affect approximately 58,000 Tri-Flex vests and an additional 40,000 Ultima and Ultimax vests with Performance Pacs.

afaik and read the monarch is not affected, how will i know if it will stop 5.56mm? is their a website i can go to w/c details results of specific test? kuya JT 5 benjamins is $500 right? gusto ku lang cguradohin thanks;)

    hi, atm :)

The Zylon issue had nothing to do with any urging of interested folks
to do research on the Monarch IIA vest.

Dino brought up the Zylon issue as it generally pertains to ballistic armor,
and I merely commented further. Sorry for the confusion.
    ;J

IIRC, you need Level III (NIJ) to thwart 5.56mm.
Level IIA will only stop .40S&W and the slower class of 9mm Parabellum.
    Perhaps someone will correct me.

There are several online police dept. memos
referring to the Colorado State Purchasing Office's results,
from submitting a number of ballistic vests (including the
Monarch Summit IIA Butterfly Lite) to a NIJ-approved facility
for testing. I'd rather not link directly to anything.

    :)

Isnt the owner of Second Chance the one who used to test his products on himself? He used to shoot himself with .44 magnum rounds to prove that his vests works. I think I saw one of those videos in MAX-X.
