An off-duty Kentucky State Police trooper was hurt Thursday afternoon after he lost control of his police vehicle and crashed in Madison County.

The incident happened at 2:10 p.m. on US 421 in Kingston. Trooper Toney Allen, 42, of Berea was traveling north on US 421 when he apparently lost control of his police vehicle and left the travelled portion of the roadway. The vehicle hit a fence and then struck a tree on the northbound shoulder of the roadway. The impact ripped the front end off the cruiser.

Allen was transported to St. Joseph Hospital in Berea, where he is being treated for a leg injury.

Allen was wearing his seat belt at the time of the collision. He was not involved in any enforcement activity prior to the collision.

The story says nothing about speed and everyone who lives here knows there are patches of ice on the road right now. Naturally half the idiots responding are accusing the trooper of driving recklessly.

I don't believe I have ever seen the entire front section of a car ripped off like that. It appears that the front portion of the frame is missing too. Also, it seems there is not much damage to the passenger compartment. Makes me wonder if there is a manufacturing defect with frame and this caused the accident.:dunno:

FWIW: the passenger compartment looks almost intact, so the officer was VERY lucky.

That said: there is something missing from the story.

The accident investigation will tell the story.

Speculation without facts is just a waste of time and bandwidth.

Unfortunately, driving fast is part of the job of a LEO.

He really must have had some serious speed on to rip the entire engine compartment off like that.

If whatever he hit had been 2 feet further aft, he would have been visiting the morgue not the ER.

That's just about the cleanest break I've ever seen (not that I'm a wreck expert). Looks like he crossed paths with a Jedi or something.

Hope the officer recovers quickly! Our roads are kind of a mess right now, with patches of snow/water/ice changing by the hour, sometimes. Best of luck, and all the rest of your Kentucky drivers, play it safe.

    He was off-duty Ray.

This is not to say he didn't see something that triggered police action.
