Just put the $200 deposit on my FIRST AR!

Hi All,

Finally I just took the plunge and am purchasing my first AR! I have a real nice and modified to my taste S&W M&P 15-22, and it grew on me to love it, but like bong hits leading to OxyContin, that bad mo fo 15-22 has gateway-drug/gun'd me to a big boy rifle.

So I put my deposit on a Bushmaster, I can't find a model name/number exactly but it is a 14.5" "Entry Rifle" with a 2" AK-style muzzle break end piece, and it's NJ Legal. It's not the Colt I wanted but hey, you do what you can and I wanted to modify this one a little. Someday next year I will get a Colt and keep it the way it is, in all its factory glory. Nor is it the "BIG BROTHER" of the S&W M&P 15-22 but that's okay, it's a Bushmaster (and I swore I would never buy a Bushmaster cause that sniper dude used one and it has a snake on it, and I hate snakes!) and it's not the Remington R-15 I came within a credit-card swipe of buying the day after Super Bowl Sunday (and the day after buying my Mossberg 930 SPX) .. but again I have plenty of time. This one looked real nice to me, it' small and light and I am a small and light guy, it's an entry/M4 type/CQB type rifle I believe and that's what I'd really want my first for, I will work on a bigger/heavier/longer range one.

The description includes:

5.56mm/.223
A2 Buttstock (But I'm having a tube put on and a Magpul MOE Stock pinned on it from the selling store)
Flat Top A3 Receiver
A3 Removable Handle with A2 Sights
14.5" Barrel with AK Brake
Tri-rail Handguard
Tri-rail Gasblock

What do you folks think, thank you for your input. I plan on decking it out in Magpul furniture where possible (in OD Green) and eventually working up some sort of optic. I would love Aimpoint/EOTech/Trijicon but maybe will take everyones sound advice and go Primary Arms here.

Thanks much, I hope it's a good decision and Bushmaster is a good brand. I know it's not Colt etc. but I am nothing but a tacticool fan and short of SHTF/Etc. I am not going into combat.

you will love the magpul products on your AR

I bought a CDNN M&P15 OR and also magpul "ed" the rifle out

some of the differences include a 16in barrel, FCS556 break, and a Primary arms M4

it is a fun shooter, I have a primary arms micro dot also but i prefer the M4 clone because i can switch the retical whenever i feel like it

on my 15-22 I did a bunch of Magpul stuff as well and I love love love it.

Magpul MOE Stock, MOE Pistol Grip, MBUS, AFG, and XTM rail covers, all in OD green but the covers are all 4 , attempt at digital camo pattern.

I had bought the Magpul Handguard and ACS? Stock I think and more advanced pistol grip cuase I wanted to make a Magpul Masada clone. But the gunsmith talked me out of into/into returneing the stuff with sound advice, basically, all for making it look cool, but whereas I would gain cool look with MOE Pistol Grip and MOE Stock etc. I would gain NOTHING but lots more money and uselessness with the fancy stock and pistol grip, and the handguard would require dissassembly and then removing the quad rail etc. so I took his advice.

But yeah love the Magpul. In fact I think that's why I didn't get a Colt MT6400c, Because I knew I wanted Magpul stuff and figuged it's a shame to change the COlt up, I think I would want the Colt M4 looking just like the M4 in all its Colt and Blacktiakal Goodness.

Can you get your money back and buy a Bravo?

Edit: forgot about the NJ thing...me still thinks there is a better AR for the same money...
Ok, for those who have their reading comprehension skills working and see that I am not looking for criticism, and I'm not moving or getting my money back to get your preferred brand, but anyone have a Bushmaster or have history with? I called a few places and read a few forums, they look pretty good I think. And I was inches away from a Remington R-15 in Feb, which is made from Bushmaster I believe, right?

Hey Scappy...dont sweat all the brand haters. Just get your gun, shoot it alot, learn what you can from it, (pros & cons) what works, what breaks, learn to work through malfunctions (even $2000 guns malfunction) and you will be happy.

If it doesn't live up to your expectations...sell it to another AR15 noob who is anxious to have an AR15 regardless of its brand name (the are lots of them!) and use that money to get what you are ready for next.

My first personally bought Ar15 was a budget model DPMS and it was a nice little shooter. It got no love at the range or from my friends but it went bang when I needed it to and I wasnt using it for high speed low drag carbine course or combat in Iraq. I sold it a year later and dont regret it one bit. If you are just going to poke holes in paper and maybe grab it for home defense (home defense = 5 minute shootout) then you should be fine in the grand scheme of things. I am guessing your handguns or shotguns will be doing home defense duty though?

Have fun and stay safe.

First you ask what we think and thank us for our input. Then you get upset when someone gives input that you don't like. Then you specifically state that you don't want criticism?

Well what do you want? Honest feedback, or only people to slap you on the butt and give you atta-boys? I couldn't care less at this point about brand preference but if you are just looking for others to justify your purchase then just say so. Don't ask us what we think if you are not willing to hear the answers.
I have worked on many bushmasters in the past. Quality control left a LOT to be desired along with fit/finish/reliability/resale value. I would never buy a Bushie for my personal collection after seeing what I did. I only put this here for you to read because you asked. Good luck. -Goodspeed :wavey:

Guess he didn't come here to learn or to hear honest opinions based on real life experience, just wanted confirmation of his decision.

Rather odd, actually.
Sorry these guys are trying to get you the best rifle for the money. Bushmaster is not the best you can do. Unless you are getting a great deal on it you can spend the same money and get a better product. Enjoy your bushy.
First, your bong and drug references have no place here.
The time to ask for input or opinions is before you make the purchase.
BM doesn’t have the best reputation. I guess it’s better to hear that sooner than later. Make sure your front sight is not canted (a common BM problem). You will also need to properly stake your gas key bolts. I hope it meets your expectations and that you’re completely happy with it. Take it out and shoot it. If you have any issues, possibly we can offer assistance.
OK Thanks everyone for your great help, and really the attitude doesn't bother me. It seems like people seem to confuse some things, I didn't ask if it was the best rifle money could buy or the best rifle for the money in your opinion, nor asked if it was what any particular people could/would buy, etc. And I hate to sound anything other than truthful, but I'm pretty good at what I do, I could pretty much buy whichever one I wanted, I just happened to like this one. ANd reading over my post a few times, I didn't ask for any attitude but got plenty of it, but that's okay, it's what's to be expected. Contrary to I guess others, this is not that huge of a purchase to me in the grand scheme of life, it's just something to get excited over for the fun. If it really is so bad like all of you want to describe, I'll stick it in the closet and go buy something else. Really not that big of a deal, but again, it reminds me not to ask for help because most of the time, I get back snippy responses and criticism rather than help, but it's cool though, kind of funny actually.

That hurt to read.

You asked for peoples opinons, got them, didn't like them, and threw a tantrum. Then you finished off with the above vague, sinlge uber paragraph diatribe about how this purchase is so financially inconsequential, (presumably because you're financially well endowed, info which you're desperate to share here) that it really means nothing to you.

Hmmmm.....then why start a thread about it?

I hope other threads of yours go better than this one.
I had about the same rifle you are buying except with an A2 receiver. The rifle ran fine and never gave me a lick of trouble. Killed several deer with it along with one of the old colt 4x scopes. The only real annoyance about it was the AK style muzzle break. Don't even think about shooting it without hearing protection and it will bother other shooters around you. Expect about a two foot fire ball coming out of the barrel each time you pull the trigger. I gave the rifle to my brother and bought a Bushmaster Patrolman M4A3 with most of the "EVIL" features after the national ban finally sunset. The newer rifle runs like a top as well on everything I feed it.
