She's a first time Mama and needed a little help with the process. It was about a 45 minute labor. The Mama and her newborn filly are doing great. The filly is all legs and wobbly ones at that, but I got her feeding from her Mama. Now it's time for my wife to take over and I'm going to try to get some shuteye as I need to get up for work in an hour.

Our 3 kids were able to witness the event, which made for a special family memory.

Oh yeah about half way through the birth the coyotes must have gotten the scent and I could hear them howling just outside the barn. I should save the placenta and bait the damn coyotes with it tonight.

I'll get some photos up later. :horse:

    wow Short Cut!!

My folks in Idaho own several head of cows and they are just starting calving season. My mom and step dad have each pulled many a calf.....My Mom's a real sucker for how adorable those little guys are.

each year they get a first time mom who refuses to be a mom, and they end having to tie her to a fence so she won't abandon the calf and so it can suck. It usually ends up ok......

baby horses are just special. I love this thread!!!

A hip urban New Yorker is driving through the countryside of Texas. He sees a rancher, in a field, struggling with a horse, trying valiantly to get help the momma birth the baby. He pulls over and runs over to help. After thirty minutes of pulling, tugging and cussing, the baby pops out and all is well.

The old Rancher thanks the yankee for his help. The yankee mentions that this is the first time he had ever seen anything like this, was utterly amazed and only had one question....

"How fast was that little horse going when he ran onto the back of the big one?"

I wish I had had a 45 min labor. Not sure I'd want something with four legs coming out of me though.

Hey all my friends are checking in. Howdy EVERYONE!

The foal is a little filly; scratch that, a BIG filly actually. I'm looking at her thinking how did you fit in there???

My 11 year old daughter, who is sharper than a riled boar's tusk, knows more about this stuff than me! She's been reading about foaling and breeding for a year or so. She came back to the house a couple of days ago and said the foal has turned. I replied, how do you know, and she proceeded to tell me all about it. Future veterinarian perhaps.

One thing about living on a ranch; the birds and the bees talk kinda takes care of itself with vivid real life demonstrations.

I'm tired as a three legged hound on a whole family of 'possums. :faint:
