I don't know if I have sufficient privileges to post in the COPS Section or not - so here goes.............

Why, when you have two bad guys in handcuffs, don't you cuff them right wrist to right wrist?

As I see it: just ONE PAIR of handcuffs are necessary and they aren't gonna run away in that condition.

    Right or wrong?

    Just a thought..................................

Because most of the time they dont go in the same car.

Not only that but now you still have two available left hands. What if both are left handed?

What if they need to be questioned separately?
I'm sure there's more beside safety reasons.

Our policy said we couldn't cuff to another person.

What is the advantage? Ok my info is 30+ yrs old. First if they were fighting why do you want them together? If they are friends why let them get the story strait?
In any case seperated is best.

Drugs found on one. "He put them in my pocket, threatened me if I said anything"... What control do you have when they both have hands free? IMO it like cuffing infront. Why bother? You hardly gain a thing in safety, restricted movements...

The only time I have seen this done somewhat effectively is on the US/Mexico border where their are often way more offenders than handcuffs and LEOs. In this situation continuity of the case, questioning, and transport are sacrificed for overall officer safety.

You realize they have to sit side by side in the back of the car, right? Why would you only have one pair of handcuffs?

Aside from that, they can still grab you, or a weapon, or evidence with a free left hand (even if they aren't left handed).

Because flex cuffs are cheap and easy to use.

I’ve only handcuffed two people together once. It was because I had multiple suspects and back up was delayed. Working for a rural department, sometimes you have to improvise. I put the two main troublemakers on the ground and cuffed the wrist of one to the ankle of the other. Then I maintained cover on the others from a distance while waiting for back up.

I never worked with any patrol deputy who carried only one pair of cuffs and who was worth a damn.

Even if you're handcuffing two hot chicks to each other around a tree, you still need two pairs.

As you can see from the replies, you don't know what you don't know until someone who actually does know tells you.

Most of law enforcement is like this, with things that look simple on paper, and in the heads of people who have never done the work but think they know better how it should be done than the people who actually do it every day, but in reality would be a failure for any number of reasons...

I'm not patrol, but I carry four. My partner carries two sets. We've used all six and then some at a few houses in which we've been. I think nine people cuffed is my record...outside the jail, that is.
