Didn't that phrase originate here on G.T.?

I heard a local new anchor use it when discussing Psy's "Gangnam" style video, and laughed my butt off.

I have heard it on GT, but I think I heard it somewhere else before.

You do know the reference of who jumped the shark?

I believe the Fonz jumped the shark, from an episode of Happy Days.

LOL no the phrase has been around along time. I know what it references but I am not sure who was the originator.

With all the hysteria over the Honey Moo Moo/La Feme Shaniqua thread, I was suddenly thinking the phrase may have started here.

    Oh well.....

I've heard that the term originated from an old episode of "Happy Days" where " The Fonz" jumps over a shark on some water skis.

The episode was so totally crappy that people actually started tuning off from the series and it began a downhill slide that eventually ended in cancellation.

Since then folks use the term "jumping the shark" to describe a moment in time where a TV series or something else turns south and starts going downhill.

Yup. So the term is like 40 years old.

Brain fart, no biggie, happens to me all the time.

The term refers to a 1977 episode of Happy Days, but it was first used in a book by John Hein in 1997.

Huh, I didn't know that. I assumed it was almost as old as the episode itself.

True. The earlier episode where he jumps his bike in Al's parking lot had such huge ratings, they tried it again with the water ski episode. HH

There used to be a website about when shows 'jumped the shark', but per the wiki below, it was sold to TV Guide's parent company and it looks like the site is done, or maybe it's in the TV Guide website content that I had no interest in searching.

Well, "irisputable" and "discusting" did originate here, so not all is lost.

That website was owned by John Hein who also wrote the book. He sold it to TV Guide for something like a million dollars or so. He works for Howard Stern now and the topic comes up here and there.

I found myself hoping for a SciFi original moment with the shark leaping into the air to bring him down. Like this.
