Just finished really good book...
You're obviously Not a Marine.
Can't say that I am. What about it didn't you like?
I've never been in the service but liked the book. I read Jarhead when it came out and then saw all the comments by Marines and former Marines that Swofford was full of crap and just telling wildly exaggerated stories or outright lies.
I thought the book was OK. He seems really full of himself and goes into great description of how every little thing has a greater meaning.
Maybe a 6/10.
i can only give the movie a 5 out of 10.
Read the book in a sitting at Barnes.
Finished it and felt the urge to wash my hands. Have never hated a book until that one.
IMHO - The book/movie is a piece of trash.
I haven't seen the movie nor read the book and have heard mostly only negative comments about both. Please give more detail, I would like to know what is unfair or untrue about the film.
I don't know if it's untrue but it's cynical, very cynical and negative.
If your familiar with Disapatches by Michael Herr it's similar to that. Very cynical about war, fighting, sacrifice, Saddam, America, Marine Corps, living, almost everything.
It's well written though, but the guy would be taking Zoloft if he felt like that.
Thanks, Sometimes watching or reading a book like that only reinforces my values. I remember reading "Fire In The Lake" which was about Vietnam. I came to the conclusion the author whose name escapes me at the time was a neomarxist and her opinion didn't hold any merit with me but She still made me think about that war and all of it's problems in a different way.
This book and movie are a disgusting abuse of a media powerplay and the book and the movie dishonor all of those fine Marines who are standing in harms way as we speak. It dishonors those Marines who have given their all for this country and this jerk's right to write such trash. It dishonors Marines PERIOD! This guy was a thief, a liar and what the Marines refer to as a 10%. How dare him make a profit on his decietful behavoir.. Thank God my son is not standing next to this guy on a battlefield as we speak. And as for all of you fighting over who is better....Grow UP! I am quite sure that there are more than a few battle hardened Marines out there who would like to meet this guy in a dark alley somewhere. I also have to assume that those of you Marines that liked this book and movie are probably in their First Term & very young.
Froggy Ruminations: Welcome to the Suck
A BIG +1.
how or why would you read the entire book and then say you had to wash your hand because ti stunk?i seldom do more than skim threw a book one ive determind it stunk up the place.
As a former marine (01-05) I say that it is an excellent book. The book isn't glorifying the Corps and the war but it is the sad honest truth. I've been to the "big sand box" twice and know the stresses it can cause. It's about his personal problems and personal views. Sorry to ruin any day dreams that everyone in the Corps loves war and is happy to be there. Many people change their mind after spending some time on the ground over there.
P.S. I still love the Corps
You made SGT in 4 years!? What was your MOS?
OBTW - You have a minority opinion amongst Marines (The word Marine is ALWAYS capitalized, and you're never a FORMER Marine - unless you got thrown out).
That's where you are wrong Big Dawg.....there are no "X Marines" just "former Marines".....I know, I know....."Once a Marine always a Marine". Yes I made Sgt in 4 years.....made LCpl and Sgt meritoriously. I was a 6046......worked with the Prowler.
I was in the Corps from 98-04 and I enjoyed the book. It tells the true story of a sad life that just happens to be in the Corps for part of his life. Hey Big Dawg when did you serve ;Q
