I'm fairly new to ARs, got a M&P Sport II and I like it. Now I'm thinking of getting an AR in 308. I will probably sell one of my L1A1s to fund the AR-10 but I have several L1A1s so no biggie. I have read good things about the DPMS Oracle and I like looks of it. I will probably put a scope on it and call it good.
Is there any good reason why I shouldn't buy one?

A crazy number of AR-15 rifles have passed through my hands and I've had a good number of DPMS rifles, parts and components of every kind. Not one bad word about them has ever come out of my mouth.

There are some versions that omit the forward assist and even the dust cover. I tired of them very quickly and rebuilt them in the more familiar form, pronto. They may have been just fine. I just didn't like them.

Buy DPMS products with confidence and beware of advice that begins: "I heard............."

I currently own and shoot a DPMS AR10 with a Burris 3-9 variable scope. It is my primary hog rifle and I am well pleased with it. It’s no sub-moa accurized sniper rifle, but is easily capable of 1.5-2 inch groups at 100. Whole setup with bipods ran me less than 1k.

I like the comment about the CSA flag at the end of your posts. I live in the Deep South now and I fly that flag on my Kubota RTV. Unfortunately history is written (and often distorted) by the winners. As a former Italian citizen I did not have a dog in this fight (the Civil War). But I think I know how you feel. I had relatives who died on the wrong side of WWII. Some were drafted, some volunteered. They thought they were on the right side and fought bravely. Their memory must be honored.

I would only suggest one thing. Understand the difference in an LR 308 vs an AR 308. There are many differences, so if you are looking at parts and aftermarket parts you need to make sure you know what you’re shopping for.

That being said I love my DPMS LR

Way back around 2008 I watched the North Carolina long distance rifle championships. I think, maybe, 30% were using DPMS .308 rifles.

I had an Oracle once; bought it NIB. The first variant, it wouldn't hold 5 MOA. That's right - 5" at 100 yards.

DPMS happily took it back, paid shipping both directions, and turned it around in 5 days. They said the barrel nut was loose... I hadn't noticed a loose barrel nut (and yes, I checked), but ok...

The second variant was worse than the first... I literally couldn't keep consistently on an NRA target at 100 yards.

DPMS happily took it back again. Paid shipping both directions, and again turnaround was quick at 5 days. This time, they reported the barrel was replaced, but no explanation as to why. Personally, I think they replaced the entire upper, which was OK by me.

The third variant was holding 3-4 MOA. Maybe that's all I should expect, but I was still disappointed. This time, when I called, they told me that 3-4 MOA was "acceptable", and they would not repair or replace the rifle if it was shooting 3-4 MOA. In those days, I was shooting A LOT, and from prone, I could shoot far better than 3-4 MOA. I like my equipment to at least match my marksmanship.

I sold that rifle at the next gun show and haven't purchased a thing from DPMS since. Don't get me wrong - their CS was VERY impressive. Quick turn-around, paid shipping, etc. However, the 3-4 MOA being tagged as "acceptable" left a bad taste in my mouth. YMMV.

bought my LR used with 300 dollars worth of extras .don’t know how many rounds thru it. Exterior in excellent condition. Never regretted the purchase and not planning on selling it.

The DPMS is a great rifle for the money. It is a stripped down basic model. I’ve owned a .308 Win LR308. Ran ok, for what it was. The only issues I had were with the DPMS magazines. My experiences were before the advent of the MagPul magazines were available. MagPul and Lancer are wonderful mags, I highly recommend them.
