Is there an age limit in your area for becoming a LEO? I ask because I had a plan to finish serving 10 years in the Navy then get out and become a LEO. I have done research on my own and can not come up with a age...some say up to 35 for prior mil some don't say.

For NJ civil service departments, the cutoff is 35. However, you can add up to 5 years to that for each year of military service, or something like that.

Pick a state/area/agency and people can help you better. Some don't have an age, some are covered under state civil service law, and some might have local restrictions. 35 is fine for any agency around here in Texas. State civil service is 45 for police, but again, not all agencies operate under those guidlines.

Sorry I did not specify because I do not know where I am going to settle. The wife and I are from different parts of the country. I was just trying to get a all over approach so I can maybe rule a few places out because of the age restriction. For sure won't be Cali.

This doesn't apply to Sheriff's Officers for some reason, but I believe they have to enroll in the Public Employee Pension System (PERS) and not Police and Fire Retirement System (PFRS, or "Police and Fire").

PFRS is a *way* better deal.

I had 46 and 47 year old Sheriff's Officers (not called "deputies" here  ) in my academy class (in 1994).

No age limit here, but for feds, it's like 38 or something because they have a mandatory retirement age so they want you to be able to do your 20 and get out.

Feds will not hire over 37 (If I remember right). Some departments have their own age caps.

Typically local agencies here hire people between 25-35. It is not uncommon to see guys hired at age 40+.

I think the oldest guy in my class was around 45.

One of the guys I worked with was an auxiliary for 10 years, then decided he wanted to go full-time...at age 43. He was top academic in his class and had no problems with the academy.

Nevada and Illinois don't have maximums but that may vary by department. It's not uncommon in NV for some of our officers to have retired from another state and work on a second pension. One of my current coworkers retired from a NY sheriff's office with 23 years and has almost 10 years with our agency, another retired from Texas, another was a deputy in Florida, another was a deputy in California, etc etc.

Keep in shape, stay healthy and keep your background clean and you should be fine.

Really depends on state and agency. My department recently dropped their age limit and hired several guys ranging from their mid 30's to mid 50's. Rumor has it that the age limit is comming back though.

I was 39 when I became an auxiliary officer.

I was 41 when I graduated the academy, and 42 when I got sworn into a local SO.

The Feds have some age limits. Check around.

FEDS - depends on the Agency

    ICE/ATF/CBP/DEA - 37 yoa
    Border Patrol - 40 yoa

Check the Stae/Local in the area where you plan to reside.
I've seen people in their 40's as the newbie.

Much luck and THANKS for your service.

There is no age limit in Maine since that would be discrimination.
You have to pass the PT test however.
