Hey all,

No doubt that the 870 and the Mossy 500 series are the undisputed KINGS of the Police, Tactical and Home Defense shotgun market. Been that way for many years with maybe Ithaca being in there are 3rd on the strength of their LEO sales alone.

Now there are many nice HD type shotguns out there and one that I have considered before is the Nova/SuperNova series from Benelli. Of course both need extended mag tubes to bring them up to the others in capacity. After that addition I can't find anything wrong with them. I would feel totally comfortable with one in my house for protection.

It seems like they don't get very much recognition. Hardly see 'em posted in the forums. Is there a reason why they are sorta looked down on from most HD shotgunners or I am just reading the tea leaves wrong on this one?

What do you all think of them compared to the 870 and 590 shotties? Does the Nova/Supernova fall short of these KINGS of the HILL? If so, in what ways? I'd like to hear what the negative thoughts on the Benelli pupm gus are if you don't mind.

Thanks for the time.

I had a Nova Tactical that I used for HD for awhile. I never could find the extension in stock the years I owned it but it didn't bother me, Most HD only lasted one or two shots and i always had my HD pistol also

I traded it years ago once i got into skeet and looked for a decent HD shotgun ever since but the ergonomics of the other HD shotguns didn't fit me as well as the Benelli

i think it was never really popular because of name (every time a new guy gets on a forum he gets the 870 vs 500 debate going), high price(relativity speaking), hard to find parts, and in the nova's case with HD loads the recoil was horrible, it was like a conspiracy to sell recoil kits and pads

I honestly prefer the benelli, but they are more expensive, lack aftermarket support, have a little longer stroke that may be short cycled, and frankly they are late to the game.
They are great guns, and after having one and liking the engineering, I upgraded to the m2.

As far as a pump goes, the Super Nova is superior to the (recent) 870. Better fit, finnish and quality control. I have a Super Nova for my wife and an M1s90 for myself for HD guns. I have a few 870s in the safe and the only one I'd put ahead of the Nova is the old Police Magnum.

I had a rattletrap of a M590 once. Never again with Mossberg.

If I were in the market for pump shotgun, I wouldn't hesitate on the Supernova or Nova. Super slick action, nice trigger, excellent build quality.

Had a Nova SP.
Aside from the action being overly long (not needing 3.5") it was a solid gun, i'd buy one again.

Remington and Mossberg have a 45 year head start on the Novas (which have been around somewhere about 10 years now)....they win simply from volume.

I have a Tactical Nova that I really like. When I first got it it was pretty much impossible to find a mag tube extension, however they seem to be be readily available nowadays. Aftermarket seems rather limited but once I found an extension tube I really didn't feel like I needed anything else, might put a light on it eventually. If you want on all around gun (hunting and HD) you might be better off with an 870 since barrels are much cheaper. However if you just want it for a purely HD role and you compare the Nova to a similar Remington there really isn't a big price difference. Overall I liked the ergos and slickness of the action on the Nova better than the 870.

I have a SuperNova Tac. Pretty nice shotgun. I thought the 3.5 shell capability was a plus when I bought it (can use any shell in it). It is more of a hindrance. When I first ran it hard I would short stroke it (that sentence sounds dirty). I learned to really positively stroke it and now feel I am better with all pumps for the experience (oh boy another dirty sentence).

Very easy to take down, smooth action and very reliable. The only downsides are the relatively long LOP. The comfortech stock is excellent but just too long. Lots of aftermarket parts for it now. I have a Mesa Tactical side saddle/pic rail and Nordic extension. I maybe adding and urbino stock to shorten the LOP.

I would much rather have a SNT over many of the new Rem870's. Seems Rem quality has fallen off.

I'll stick with my mossy's... and if I wasn't sure that sentence above clinches it :whistling:
