Hi~

I have carried one (a Gen3 22) and I always shot it really well. Now I have what seems to be a fairly sizable amount of boxed factory loaded HST and practice ammo, plus lots of bullets and brass to load more.

But I don't own anything in a .40S&W. Would you buy one today if you were in that situation?

Handgun? Hi-Point Carbine? Gotta admit the Hi-Point kinda intrigues me right now.

I have a Hi Point 4095 carbine and while it is ugly, the thing is like a Timex. I've never had a failure with it and it is pretty accurate. The downside, besides looks, is the 10 round single stack magazines.

I have a large stash of once fired 40 S&W brass from when one of the local sheriff's departments was using 40 caliber MP5s.

Along with the Hi Point carbine, I also have a Star Firestar M40 and a couple of P80 builds in 40. I used a 940CL (compact long slide) with a G22 slide and a Strike 80 compact frame with G23 slide.

I know that there are a lot of arguments for and against 40 S&W but it is still a good caliber.

Yes, I have a year old Beretta PX4 Storm full size .40 S&W and really like it.

Some don't like the DA/SA trigger but I do. It's a tad long but it's smooth and I don't feel a need to use the safety if I were doing CCW with it. 14+1 capacity.

Starting load with Hodgdon's CFE Pistol outruns any 45 ACP other than Underwood and Underwood's 40 Smith does outrun all including Underwood.

Recoil isn't "snappy" as some say, just a nice gun.

And, adding to the pleasure, I think it's even a tiny bit easier to disassemble than a Glock and that's saying something and you don't need to pull the trigger to do so. Don

Just got one in a trade a while ago, was ordering some .45 HST and they accidentally sent me .40.

Took it as a sign and have been carrying it after I determined it shoots well.

Reloading components haven't been hard to find and I had a pile of brass randomly collected anyway.

I have seven .40 S&W handguns and a barrel to make an eighth a .40 S&W. My G27 is what tends to get carried. All of my assigned duty sidearms were in .40 S&W and I bought the last two; G22.3 and G22.4.

Even though I have other caliber options, I still gravitate to the .40 S&W. Or a j-frame….

.40 isn't going anywhere and will always maintain a presence with civilian market; probably moreso than .45. under your circumstances i'd acquire another unless you're attempting to consolidate.

Of all the handguns I own, only three are .40 S&W; a Glock 22.4, Glock 23.3, and a Beretta 96A1. I haven't touched the caliber since around 2018. I probably would not buy another .40 handgun as I'm just not really sold on it.

If you want a gun in .40S&W, it sounds like a great excuse to get one! It is a reliable round, and will be around for a long time.

If you don't want it, perhaps you should look into selling your ammo stash. Now is a great time to unload it and switch to something you prefer!

Both paths are good! If you have reloading stock on hand, it seems like a way to get cheap ammo when ammo is tough to find, so I would lean towards getting a .40S&W. Police trade-ins in this caliber are abundant, even in this price-gouging time.

I had a 4095 too

Had a major failure - sent it to Hi Point they fixed it -

Then it was 100% reliable again - when cleaning I discovered the frame was cracked - although the gun still functioned.

I sent it back to Hi Point - came back a new gun

I sold it without ever shooting it again.

IMHO you should carefully inspect the frame when you clean it - the 40 S&W round has more recoil and I think the 4095 was designed off the 9MM version.

Here is where mine cracked.

Just got a M&P 2.0 with safety. I love it.

Nothing wrong with the 40 S&W - I use to have several - I am down to one. I still keep it locked in a safe in the spare bedroom in the back of the house.

I prefer the 9MM or 45 ACP as a SD round - I CC a small 9MM and my bump in the night handgun is a G21 in 45 ACP.

I don't hate the 40 S&W - but don't worship it either - for ME the other calibers are a better fit - I shoot the 9MM better than the 40 S&W out of small size guns and I shoot the 45 ACP better in a full size gun.

Since there are millions of them out there I doubt they will be discontinued in my grandkids grandkids lifetimes.

Sure I'd buy them. .40 S&W isn't disappearing, other than among new guns. There are enough of them out there that the ammo isn't going away. If other people don't want it, that only helps me get it cheaper.

I would not buy anything made by Hi Point, ever. I would buy a .40 S&W carbine and I'd prefer it to 9mm.

I love my Hi Point 4095. It's my bedside long gun.

I also have a PX4 Storm, full size in .40. A very nice pistol.

I almost sold them both recently, along with a big pile of ammo, just because I've really been getting into .45 ACP and I had this idea around consolidating calibers. But somebody (wisely) talked me out of it.

I probably wouldn't buy another .40, just because I like .45 more lately. But there's absolutely nothing wrong with the caliber.

I think people wrongly view .40 as the "in between" caliber when it really isn't. It's the modern update on .45, with more capacity, more penetration, and better barrier penetration. In addition, it's extremely potent out of a carbine barrel. I think it might be one of the best semi-auto pistol cartridges to use in a carbine.

So I say if you like it, go for it!

Ok…so you used to carry an issued .40 but do not own one and have plenty of .40cal ammo on hand? Is that your dilemma? And what should you do?

Obviously the .40cal is obsolete. It’s antiquated and as soon as all the old fossils and geezers expire no one will think any more of it. You should send that ammo to me where I will know instantly what to do w/ it and not find myself in a conundrum.

One other thing that tempts me is a Browning Hi Power in .40. At the height of my Covid sickness in November, I saw one on GB with a bonus .357 Sig barrel for $850.00, and a ton of spare parts. I was so gone, I said to myself, "I'll buy it tomorrow." Nope, no you won't dummy, someone else got to it first. STUPID!!!!!!!!!!
