Is GSSF the only competition? Or are there other Glock or general semi-auto pistol competitions?

With the growing popularity of guns, I'm surprised that there are not more competitions out there.

There's USPSA, IPSC, and IDPA. Check out their websites. Chances are there's a club near you.

    USPSA is the big one.

They are the US branch of the international Practical Shooting Assn. (IPSC)

Next would be IDPA, which was an offshoot of USPSA that is a little more defensive-shooting oriented.

Another good one for new shooters is "Steel Challenge".

Google any of those & you will find a plethora of information on them, usually including club finders to find out who is doing matches near you..

    IDPA
    USPSA in the states
    IPSC outside the country
    NRA Action Pistol
    Steel Challenge
and quite a few boot leg matches at local clubs
    Ruger Rimfire
ProAm Shooting, it's a once a year boot leg steel match with unreal amount of prizes.

GSSF is actually the least "well known" of the competitions there are, primarily because it's Glock only, also because there are no "local" matches. By "local", I mean a club that runs a match of that type every month.

I live near Charlotte, and there's an IDPA match here in Charlotte every month, another maybe 50 miles away, and a 3rd 80 miles away.

For USPSA, there are 3 in the greater Charlotte area, and a 4th 80 miles away. That furthest one actually holds two per month.

Realize, IDPA/USPSA are *very* different from GSSF. Your gun starts holstered (usually), and on the beep you draw, and most stages will require mag changes.... all on the clock. Also movement, barriers, ports, moving targets, etc. etc. They are truly ACTION matches.

So you need to master not just shooting, but all gun handling techniques (the top guys can draw and first shot off in .8 or so), and mag changes should be practiced until they are blindingly fast.

Go to youtube and search for USPSA/IDPA and Bob Vogel. Or Dave Sevigny. There are other top shooters, but not so many that excel in both of those.

Also realize... there are different divisions so you might see an open gun (optical sights and compensator) and Limited guns, which can have a large magazine with 20+ rounds in it.

The Production divisions are more like GSSF, where you're limited to (mostly) stock gun and 10 rounds in magazine.

Yep... we have a .22 2-gun at our club. There is something for everyone out there.

There is also PPC and Bullseye, which are shot at many local clubs.

None of the other competitions offer the prizes that GSSF offers.

Look around at your local ranges and you might be surprised what you find.

Around here, in addition to what's been mentioned (GSSF, USPSA, IDPA, Steel) there's a range that does a once a month bowling pin shooting match, another that every few months does a CMP style military rifle match, regular skeet and clays matches, black powder matches, silhouette matches, SASS matches, and probably some others that have slipped my mind.
