What have you used? How well did it work? Looking for free but would be willing to pay -$10 for a decent turn by turn app. Don't want to pay the $15+ a day for the rental car unit.

iOS 6 has a new maps app with turn by turn directions provided by TomTom. The maps kinda suck depending on where you are.

If you don't like the new iOS6 maps MotionX GPS Drive is pretty good.

I purchased the TomTom app a couple of years ago. It is hands down better than all the other apps, including Garmin. The TomTom will work without cell service. Updates are free. It is a little pricey and a large app, but if you want a real GPS app; it is the only way to go. If you don't use one much, then the 'others' are not a bad bargain. If you travel a lot, in and out of cell service, I would strongly suggest the TomTom app. Just my $.02.

The iOS6 Maps app is basic at best. I've tried using it yesterday and today and it is ok; it is basic. Not impressed.

I got to test-drive (no pun intended) the IOS6 map today. Worked fine. I don't see all the complaining. The WSJ had a map of Indiana State U (I think) on it and, GASP, Apple missed showing 2 alleys in a NSEW street grid. OH NOES!

The good/bad is that the maps are web-based. So improvements will happen as they add to them. It's on-the-fly. That's great because as Apple improves the data, you don't need to download anything. Downside: Hope you always have data signal. Or yer bleeped.

After having to use my OLD iOS5 mapping on Wednesday to get to an unfamilar Home Depot, I love this new style app.

I've got Motion-X Drive and GPS but I seem to be using Mapquest, which has free voice turn by turn. I'm also not happy with Apple since I used Google maps so much, especially street view.

Side note...iOS6 turn-by-turn is for iPhone 4s or 5 only. So if'n you have an older 4 like me, doesn't work.

But I've known to snarl, "Shut up, <female dog>!!" to turn by turn instructors anyway, so no good for me.
