Is there a setting on your iPhone (I don't have one, btw) which can prevent marking messages in an Exchange mailbox "read" when you read them on the iPhone? User is connected via IMAP I guess and when he reads mail on iPhone wants it to still be shown as unread in Outlook.

My understanding is that Exchange & IMAP are two separate technologies and that exchange should, by default, provide IMAP-like capabilities, meaning that changes get synchronized among all devices.

Have him delete the account on his iPhone and set it up again, but have him select the "MS Exchange" option at the very top where you select the acct. type.

If the acct is set up as an exchange acct on the iPhone, when you read an email, it will be marked as read when viewing the email from Outlook or OWA or whatever.
