i guess the $199 3G iPhone is highly subsidized by the telco carrier. :)

in the local scene, prices are absurdly high. got this from another forum:

the new 3G iphone is subsidized by AT&T (locked also)in the US thus the low price. it has faster download speed and better applications.:wavey:

Rogers Wireless and Fido carries this phone in Canada. The packages were initially expensive, but when the public complained, they lowered their prices.

A downside, according to tech experts, is that the battery can't be replaced.

They are not subsidized. You are paying for it.

$199 for the phone. Without contract $600.00

(Manufacturing cost: $179.00)

Just look at the ATT's Nation plan

$69.99 per month 450 minute (anytime) 5000 min (Night & Weekend)
$89.99 per month 900 minute (anytime) unlimited (Night & Weekend)
$109.99 per month 1350 minute (anytime) unlimited (Night & Weekend)
$129.99 per month (unlimited)

For 2 year contract.

Say $70.00 x 24 months = $1680.00

It is more than enough to cover the cost of the phone.

The trick is to buy the unlock phone, then use the Wifi feature to surf the net.

I had an iPhone. I sold it.

Aside from the irritation that the battery cannot be replaced, there are several other drawbacks :

- you cannot cut and paste on it (this is really terrible if you do a lot of SMS'ing or making notes for file )

- the keyboard- well, no haptic feedback, impossible to use unless you are looking right at it. If you have fat fingers, forget it.

- the keyboard, except for one situation, does not work in horizontal mode

- the battery just doesn't last very long. I had to recharge it more than once a day , and I was not a heavy user.

There are better machines out there, in my opinion.

I still have my 2G (4GB) iphone only because I can start it faster than my PC and browse the net. Yun na lang purpose nya. If you're thinking of getting one, I suggest a Nokia N95 8GB or the N82(?) instead. Better implementation of just about everything.

true, true, the downside of iphones (ipods too) the battery couldnt be replaced, not only is globe charging ridiculous prices but yes stick to the nokias and samsungs for more user-friendly (text-wise, etal) wifi available phones.

another drawback...

- bluetooth is for headset functions only, you can't use for file transfer or file sharing
- you transfer music only thru itunes and your gigabyte of space is purely for apple's multimedia storage only, you cant use it for other purposes.
