...and if not to personal, what do you do for a living?

From the 60 hour a week thread, I think a lot of times it comes down to "do you like your job?" If you like or get fulfillment from your job, the hours go by a lot easier.

I'm a VP of a company. I'm in charge of supply chain, product management and marketing. It certainly isn't always "fun", but it has been a fulfilling career.

I like the industry, I enjoy the people I work with (vendors and factories too), I'm the president of an industry board (currently...my term is up next year), and I have the biggest corner office. :)

Some of my closest friends are competitors even. That happens a lot in my industry because people move around. My biggest competitor is my best friend and he used to work for me.

I love my job! I work in the environmental field on the regulatory side of things focusing on Erosion and Sediment control and Waterway and Wetland encroachment.

I get to do a lot of fun field work, and for that I pay by doing a fair amount of paperwork and permit reviews. Every site, permit, etc is new and different so it's not the same thing day in and day out.

Trainings used to be fun times where we'd go to conferences, learn all day and have some beers at night but now they're all webinars because of Covid. The one thing I dislike about it is that the regulations and processes I work with are constantly changing in new and often stupid ways so I have to keep up on that.

The higher up in government you go the more they like to change stuff. Most of that is attributed to being constantly challenged by lawyers.

that sounds like a great gig. I'd especially like the field work. I would have loved to be a conservation officer.

I don't like what environmental regulation does to my job though. ;-)

I get buried in CITES issues for guitar woods, UL and ROHS certifications for guitar amplifiers and stage lighting, Prop 65 (California) issues for guitar cases and piano benches etc.

    Green,

Sounds interesting! but I have a question...is there ANYTHING (anything at ALL!) that California hasn't declared as a possible carcinogen?

I’m retired now, but I was a firefighter for 29 years, and loved it.

Amen to that. They also have a "bounty" program which pays citizens to report on suspected offenders. Lovely.

Machinist. I love what I do, but I don't like the people I have to spend my days with.

I wish I was good with my hands like that. I love "machined" things....firearms, high-end fly fishing reels, watches etc.

Been restoring lost parts of lives through helping people hear better for 25 years...

I really enjoy it most of the time. Sometimes people can be hard to deal with, but for the most part, I love my job.

Took "early " retirement after vesting at 13 years of LEO work. That was in 1995 but I couldn't collect till age 55, so I survived to that milestone. Keeps the lights on and baloney sandwiches on the table.

Now I multi unit manage in a retail environment. God willing and the market doesn't collapse, 5 more years and I'm fully retired. Could do it now, but wanted to be fully independent.

Going to buy a house on a quiet lake somewhere and shoot guns off my back porch. :)

    4 years, 10 months, 13 days...

And to answer the thread main question, I'm ambivalent about my job. It's just the funding vehicle toward my freedom.
