I know in other threads people of GT seem to have some crazy injuries. So I know some of you have had a separated a rib before. How did it feel for you? Most importantly, how long did it take to heal?

I did mine in Jujitsu around Thanksgiving time and just finally went to the doctor last week to get it checked on (I am very suborn about going to doctors). I will have days of feeling fine, and other days I will wake up and it hurts really bad. Sneezing is probably the single most painful thing. I really want to get back to working out and going to jujitsu which I love, but I don't want to be dumb about it and keep re-aggravating it like I have been. How long did it take you to start feeling better?

I separated mu ribs at the sternum. I still have this funny little "bone" right in the center where it didn't grown back correctly, or it did grow back correctly, just not the way it was before.

It took like 4 months to heal but, I never went to the doctor. I was drinking a lot back then and thought it would be OK .... I was wrong.

It hurt like hot hell for the entire time but, it did finally go away. Cheap whiskey and soda pop make a good "don't care" diet.

I did, but as part of a more serious injury. Several of them at the sternum. It's been over a year, still healing.

Never had what you have (knock on wood!!) but I did have a seperated Tibia, Jeeping accident broke it in two spots 3 inches above the ankle and shatterd the Fibula into like 6 pieces. Got a titanium rod as the prize (after the ER doctor said I won 1st prize for worst accident over the Labor Day weekend in 2007). It took about December before I was walking again without crutches, and about a year before walking easier and smoothly (It's amazing how much muscle you loose from Atrophy in so little time).

I am looking for a place around here to begin Jujitsu as it looks like it would be very useful and one hell of an exercise.

    Hope you get well!!!

Never. But I often follow Homer's sage advice to numb the pain.

That is not what I wanted to hear hehe.... Though I have been following Homer's advice this week to try to feel better.
I truly enjoy going to the gym and working out. This has been so frustrating having to sit and do nothing.

Some people heal quicker than others. You sound active and young. I'm guessing you'll fare well in time.

    Or hurt something else.

I first separated a rib in the late 80's doing deep dips. I thought it was a heart attack! The XRAY showed the rib out of place, very cool. Doc have me muscle relaxers and no weight lifting for a few months (and I ignored most of his advise)

It took a few months to heel, and I would occasionally irritate it, but nothing crippling, but it would get my attention. In 1999 I did it badly again. I had been doing dips again and the rib was fine, until I collapsed from the pain. My workout partner said it looked like I was having a heart attack! I told him no, just a bad rib.

The ER doc I saw was an orthopedic specialist with degree in chiropractic and a sports medicine background. Man did I hit the jackpot with him!

He had me sit up high on the table, hold my knees to my chest and exhale deeply. He wrapped his arms around me and me knees very tightly, he held it for about a minute, I could feel my chest relaxing.

He had me stand up, he checked me and we repeated the "Hug".

    Instant relief!

On his orders, no more dips. He also said the more I injure it, the more it will happened easily just stretching or reaching for stuff.

He was right, I can feel it still if I reach too far or twist and reach back too far.

Time and rest are the only cure I think.

Sneezed real hard 7 years ago and POP. It took months to feel close to better. Sneezing and coughing were the worst. I would say laughter is the best medicine but that hurt too. Even now if I get poked there it hurts.

it felt worse then the bruised rib,but better then the broken ones.

it took me about 3-4 months for it to not hurt when i inhaled too deep.but it happened when i had pneumonia and could`nt stop coughing so i`m sure that prolonged/did`nt help it.
