If you get a chance to see the old Sledge Hammer TV series (its out on DVD now), I highly recommend it. Its basically a spoof of Dirtry Harry movies and features a lead character who loves violence and secretly talks to his gun. One of the running gags is that whenever Sledge even reaches toward his coat, all the other cops in the room immediately dive for cover. Yes, I know. This sounds pretty anti-gun. The show was, in fact, created by a an outspoken Liberal (back in the 80s, the TV networks insisted on balanced writing. The writers of Sledge Hammer responded by first fun making of Republicans, but then just, uh, never got around to making fun of Democrats). But before you get offended, remember that the show is a spoof. Very much in the style of Get Smart. The difference is that no one would ever look at Maxwell Smart and then seriously argue that real Intelligence agencies should curtailed based on the TV show. But today the anti-gun crowd is so hysterical that they would like people to believe that Sledge Hammer is actually representative of real gun owners. However, most normal people will see that the show is so over-the-top that it was never intended to be anything but a caricature of various Hollywood stereotypes. But more importantly, the show is genuinely funny. Or, at least youll enjoy it if youre a fan of the Get Smart, Mel Brooks genre. Im sure some would consider the show to be crude slapstick. But if you watch closely, theres usually a lot of funny undertones in the dialogue and visual jokes going on in the background. Yes, a lot of the jokes have a definite Leftist twist. But, being both a Conservative and a gun fan myself, I actually find these jokes to be even funnier. Not because theyre true, but because of the thought anyone would actually think that they could be true. So I recommend watching Sledge Hammer if you ever get the chance. Trust me on this, I know what Im doing.
