We are going to upgrade our computers this weekend and are changing servers along with software for the server. There has to be some new software installed on our existing server before we change change over the data, and I want to have a copy of the hd incase things turn south. Can Norton Ghost be used to clone a Novell server?

    Thanks
    Jon

Thanks for the link, but that looks like an expensive program for a 1 day use. All I am wanting to do is ghost the drive so if something goes bad during the install of the new agency management software, we can have something to fall back on. Thanks

Get hold of a *NIX box with more free space than the disk you want a copy of

Put the disk you want a copy of into the box and boot

Call the copy-from drive hdb and the partition of the copy-to drive partition mounted on /usr/local/backup

    dd if=/dev/hdb of=/usr/local/backup/image.img

Wait for a bit. You will have a bit copy of the drive as it sits.

If it gets screwed up, no matter how badly, put it back into the *NIX box

    dd if=/usr/local/backup/image.img of=/dev/hdb

It has been a long time since I worked on Novell servers (Netware version 2,3,4), however I think this may help

Use the built in Novell mirroring to make a copy of the Netware partitions (your DOS partition backup with xcopy, make it bootable with sys etc).

Shut down the server and remove the mirrored disks,

if something goes wrong swap the production disks with the broken mirror disk and reboot.

I think this will work, Netware 5 addressed issues with mirroring NSS volumes if I am not mistaken.

This is how I do it on Unix boxes running VXVM today.

    [edit]

Here is a link to Novell Support that talks about recovering from a disk failure. My post above is basicly the same steps however you removing the drives is the "failure."

Thanks a bunch for the help. We are going from Novell 3.x to Win 2003 server and I am glad. I hate Novell with a passion.
