After much waiting I received the news today: I'm being assigned a patrol rifle and I go through the school March 3-4.

It's nice when things turn around for you.:wavey:

They have FINALLY (and tentatively) scheduled my rifle school as well. I've been waiting for about 6 months!

They issue us Colt 6920's w/ no optional equipment. I'm trying to talk them into letting me at least put a light on it, since I do work in the dark for half my shift.

Of course, common sense requests usually don't make it very far!

Just an aside, I tried for 3 years, that's right years, to get lights on our rifles. Finally, The powers that be decided that it is dark most of the time the rifle is being deployed and decided to get us some lights.

Patience. And congrats on the skool.

Do they actually specifically prohibit any additional equipment on them?

My Department issues Colt rifles and we are not supposed to do any serious modifications to the rifle that require any gun smithing. We used to not allow optics (RDS or HWS) unltil 2 years ago but even before then there was no rule against putting a light on a rifle. Our policy did not forbid it either but rather just didn't mention them at all... If it's like our policy used to be maybe you can stick one on with some sort of clamp on mount to the barrel or sight post. Or what all of us used to do is replace the standard foregrip with two piece rail grips since they require no modding and just clamp on then we'd all toss a light on that.

That's nothing - we have no slings on any of our long guns and the tactically challenged admin refuses to put them on. THUMBS UP, yay!!!

Congrats - but it's such a suprise to hear about dimwitted admit guys who make policies against putting things like lights on long guns. I just don't understand the thinking behind it. It costs little money and can save so much grief.

Any agency administrator that do not approve of lighting on patrol rifles are BEGGING to be sued. Just asking for trouble or akin to sending the rifle out without giving the officer a magazine.

    Dragoon, is that you?

I wonder if you can walk down the streets of Kalkaska with that in your hand?

School? We're just handed a mini-14 and told to put 10 shots in the COM area.

No, but as soon as you cross the bridge you're issued one to protect the homestead.

When I said COM, I meant the radio on the belt or the lapel mic. I didn't mean center of mass. Oh, and that's after a barrel roll too.
