I'm a 99 per center

    Finally got the bike, took the MSF course, got the little "M" on my license, and went riding. Actually, I'd been putting around the neighborhood for a few weeks before I became official. This thing is not a hoot for a new rider on the highway, but I didn't stay on it for too long. I hit the back roads for awhile and found some parking lots to spin around at low speed with no kids or traffic around.

    I would've expected to have a little more clutch to play with in a bike that's meant for some trail riding, but there seems to be a lot less "friction zone" on this thing than in the little 250 Suzuki standard/cruiser I rode for my MSF course. Anyway, I'm pretty well hooked :supergrin:

    Congratulations and welcome to the world of motorcycles. I'm a 99% as well and I've ridden off and on for over 30 years. That bike should be a lot of fun. Enjoy it and ride safe!!

    I've never ridden a true dirt bike before so I can't comment on what the friction zone should be on a dirt dawg.

    Thanks, fellas, I am having a blast. I was just over on the KLR forum trying to figure out how to adjust my shock preload and adjust the clutch before I ride this afternoon.

    J.R.: It's a weak joke and a piss-poor thread title, for starters:)

    It refers to the period of time when all motorcyclists were considered criminals. A manufacturer made the claim that 99% of all bikers were nice people and not that scary Marlon Brando-type. Then the biker gangs ran with that concept and began to refer to themselves as "one-percenters".

    I know. I'm not saying the KTM's don't give me a little twitch in the nether regions, but the Kawi just struck me as the Glock of dual-sports. Been around in vaguely the same form forever, plenty of aftermarket (if you're into that sort of thing) and a huge database of been-there-done-that info on the web forum(s).

    Meanie, the KTM is severe boner material. But it costs $13,000 + rape-me fees. Since there's only ~500 in the USA.


    The KLR is the far better value. You can easily get parts for 'em, and it's plenty fast to pinstripe yer underwear. ;)

    Tried to sit on one last weekend. Wasn't happening. At 5.8, I don't have a chance in hell of touching the ground...

    I wish I could find some pics of the open class hill climber or Dakar quads. Some of them are running modified busa engines and I have heard that some are evn turboed. An easy 300+ hp off road. :shocked: I know it isn't technically a "bike" but you can still fall off the thing and they should be able to climb any hill you throw at it (thanks to the traction of 2 big ole wheels putting power down and the low center of gravity).

    I guess what I am trying to say is that I miss my Raptor. :supergrin:

    Falman, I thought that after your latest boxer + asphalt adventure, you'd see the inherent issue with having those exposed heads on a off-road bike. ;) Granted, they look cool... just not very sleek.

    That's not rear tire roost behind the bike, it's the torn-up topsoil from a boxer-head ditch-witch trencher. :clown:

    And no dealers within a kazillion miles of Ar-Kansas.

    I've done a little lusting after most of the cool new crop of dual-sports, but I'm patting myself on the back over the KLR. There are so many cool mountain twisties around here with logging trails every half-mile or so that I'll never lack for something to do. I'll keep it and get a touring bike in a couple of years.

    Any input on keeping it from getting too squirelly on the highway? I'm weighing in at about 270 right now and the front tire wants to seriously wander starting at about 50mph. I've had fork braces and other trinkets metioned to me, but should I start with figuring out how to adjust the suspension first?

    I think both of Kawi's dual-sports have a 35" seat height. I am about 6'3", and on my tiptoes when I get on it.

    The fork & rear shock springs and spring rate are likely optomized for a much lighter rider.

    I'd switch-out the fork springs and rear shock spring for hardware that's correct for your body weight.

    Unless you start really pushing it off-road, badass valving and progressive rate springs probably overkill.

    Braces and stabilizers, etc, are just cover-ups.
