If you could have any rank in the army...

What would it be?

Take all pay and associated benefits out of the equation. Ignore prestige, job opportunities after the military, or what your family would think. If you could be any rank, which one would you choose?

Would it be:

A specialist, enough time in service to avoid the bad details, but low enough in rank to avoid having to take much responsibility?

A Captain, with his own company?

A Lieutenant General, with enough power to make real changes?

A First Sergeant, the top enlisted guy in a company?

A buck Sergeant, in charge of a group of enlisted soldiers, making things happen?

A Chief Warrant Officer, "the best rank in the army."

Staff Sergeant, in charge of a squad.

I always wanted to eventually make Sergeant Major.

20 years before you could become a Chief 5. I wonder if that changed?
In aviation if you promote to CW2, CW3 and CW4 as quickly as possible. You will have 20 years TIS when you make CW5. Of course everyone does not make CW5.
I am just a lowly Cadet right now. Hope someday to make it to O-6.

Welcome to the Military Cadet, give everything you've got, every time you give and never, ever quit. Listen to your NCOs and the men in your charge. Always lead from the front and never micro-manage. RLTW
WO 4 No one can mess with you!
Why not CW5? The insignia is so strange few know what you actually are.
The Very First Five Times I was on Guard Duty I was picked because somebody else in my platoon was somewhere else.
I very quickly learned to be an early riser on Saturday and Sunday mornings. It got me out of the barracks and away from any "Hey You!" CQ looking for a warm body for Guard Duty.
I was also rained on those five nights. Every Single One.
Leaned quickly to answer a knock on the barracks door on a Saturday or Sunday with an open beer. Kept you away from the "hey you" roster.

Depends on how much you had before you went to WOCC as well.

I will be at 20 as a 3.

If you went street to seat, you could be a 5 in less than 20

Hmm...probably SSG/Squal Leader. I love training soldiers hands-on, yet that hasn't been my job in decades. I went to ROTC after E-4. I've been a LTC for about a year and a half, it is a pretty good rank as well for all the prior mentioned reasons. It wasn't until I made Major that I even felt like I had any influence in the unit. As a Major, especially S3 and BN XO, I did have a lot of input and influence in the BN so that was nice.

I was a gunny on the Marines.
Isn't that like a 10 star general in the army?

Major General, since that's as high as I can go in the JAG Corps.
Buddy of mine just retired at that rank. Said the last several years after he got his first star made all the years of BS fade away. He started in combat arms and wound up in training and logistics. Saw action in Gulf 1 in armor.
Yup CW2, seen many and no one screwed with them not even the Brigadier. Plus they were smart and got things done. SFc's a dime a dozen, half of them are worthless! Staff Sgt do all the work and the SFC tries to take all the credit or passes the buck if SHTF. Majors always bucking for rank, all a PITA. 0-6, think they are God and low be it for the poor troop that makes it not so.
Now everything changes with specially groups Medical, Dental, ADA, nuclear assurity, special ops. I once watched a CW2 PA get a general fried for stupid orders. changes with the service also.

No gunnies are like flys, they eat sh** and bother people doing the work.

Upon further reflection, I would have to say Master Chief Warrant Officer W5.
Master of your realm with little or no outside interference.

The rank would not be important to me. It would be the opportunity to teach the skills that I learned -like what I learned from the former head of the Rhodesian Army scouts in mantracking; what I learned about the use of optics; and how to think and perform under stress; how to improvise.
