If you could have any rank in the army...

What would it be?

Take all pay and associated benefits out of the equation. Ignore prestige, job opportunities after the military, or what your family would think. If you could be any rank, which one would you choose?

Would it be:

A specialist, enough time in service to avoid the bad details, but low enough in rank to avoid having to take much responsibility?

A Captain, with his own company?

A Lieutenant General, with enough power to make real changes?

A First Sergeant, the top enlisted guy in a company?

A buck Sergeant, in charge of a group of enlisted soldiers, making things happen?

A Chief Warrant Officer, "the best rank in the army."

Drill sergeant.

"Beat your face PRIVATE! Beat your face!
More a duty position, than a rank, and it's not nearly as cool as some people think.
a retired 4 star General with 30 years in servicel? :)
I'd settle for being a retired specialist.

Private, everyone tells you what to do but you have no responsibilities!
The Very First Five Times I was on Guard Duty I was picked because somebody else in my platoon was somewhere else.
I very quickly learned to be an early riser on Saturday and Sunday mornings. It got me out of the barracks and away from any "Hey You!" CQ looking for a warm body for Guard Duty.
I was also rained on those five nights. Every Single One.
My favorite rank and job was SSG, 19K M1A1 Tank Commander. I went higher, but I didn't enjoy the increased level of politics that came with those jobs.

I had the most fun as an E-2 stateside on $85/month.
Agreed...W2 with an expensive but moderately fun toy. My responsibility? I'm sorry? are you talking to me? Sorry, I can't see or hear you past the tip of the rotor...because nothing past that is my problem haha!
I gotta say, CW5 was pretty nice.
I wish they had still had spec 5, 6, 7, 8's when I was in. I would be the highest paying EM rank available.

I knew of a heard OF Specialists 7, NEVER Spec 8's.
I had a Spec/5 as a roommate when I was getting my Wings at Fort Benning, I cannot recall a single Spec/6. As I recall they were phasing out Spec/7; not sure about Spec/6's. I think they were phasing Spec/6's out as well in the early 1980's.

Chief 5's were coming in as I was getting out.
20 years before you could become a Chief 5. I wonder if that changed?
I'll take Commander In Chief...

Do they still use Specs? And is it still just to avoid giving someone a "permanent" rank and pay like E4 or E5 as an ex?

They had them, before my time, wasn't sure about spec 9, but they had those too.

Retired as a LTC, so that would have to be it.
OTOH, CSM wouldn't be to shabby, either!

I'm currently a 1SG, as much as I enjoy my job(most of the time), I loved being a platoon sergeant.

Best ranks for me were Sgt. E-5 and Cpt. 0-3.
The baddest MOFO in the US Army is a newly Tabbed SPEC4 in the 75th Ranger Regiment. He thinks he's GOD, He acts like GOD and if you get in his way he'll send you to meet GOD. RLTW young Specialist, now get that private to buff the floors. Hooah! haha
While a newly minted E4 undoubtedly thinks he has the best rank.

There are much better ranks. If he hangs around a while he'll learn that.
