Private, everyone tells you what to do but you have no responsibilities!
The Very First Five Times I was on Guard Duty I was picked because somebody else in my platoon was somewhere else.
I very quickly learned to be an early riser on Saturday and Sunday mornings. It got me out of the barracks and away from any "Hey You!" CQ looking for a warm body for Guard Duty.
I was also rained on those five nights. Every Single One.

Agreed...W2 with an expensive but moderately fun toy. My responsibility? I'm sorry? are you talking to me? Sorry, I can't see or hear you past the tip of the rotor...because nothing past that is my problem haha!

I wish they had still had spec 5, 6, 7, 8's when I was in. I would be the highest paying EM rank available.
I knew of a heard OF Specialists 7, NEVER Spec 8's.
I had a Spec/5 as a roommate when I was getting my Wings at Fort Benning, I cannot recall a single Spec/6. As I recall they were phasing out Spec/7; not sure about Spec/6's. I think they were phasing Spec/6's out as well in the early 1980's.

Do they still use Specs? And is it still just to avoid giving someone a "permanent" rank and pay like E4 or E5 as an ex?

They had them, before my time, wasn't sure about spec 9, but they had those too.

The baddest MOFO in the US Army is a newly Tabbed SPEC4 in the 75th Ranger Regiment. He thinks he's GOD, He acts like GOD and if you get in his way he'll send you to meet GOD. RLTW young Specialist, now get that private to buff the floors. Hooah! haha
