The best rank I every held was 1SG. You are still able to interact with the troops on a professional basis and don't have to put up with alot of the politics that a CSM does. Diamonds are forever!

I retired with 26 years as a CW4 (P).

The differance in commissioned and Warrants is simple:

Commissioned means it is put into service

Warrant means it is guaranteed to work!

During my two tours in Vietnam (I Corp) the dangerous flights were always flown by Warrant Officers.......................wonder why?

I'm a LTC now.....I often look at my CSM and wish I was his rank.....to me any soldier with three stripes up and three stripes down that has something in the middle....either a diamond or a star....gets more respect than I do....and probably deserves it....heck, who am I fooling.....definitely deserves it....

I can have any rank I want?
I'll take "Specialist - 9" in the Army.

That way nobody can tell me nothing and everybody will leave me alone.
They don't have Spec9s anymore? Okay. Give me "Warrant - 5" in the Marines.

That way, nobody can tell me what to do and I don't have to sit in meeting about nothing all day like the O-3s and O-4s.

What would it be?

Take all pay and associated benefits out of the equation. Ignore prestige, job opportunities after the military, or what your family would think. If you could be any rank, which one would you choose?

Would it be:

A specialist, enough time in service to avoid the bad details, but low enough in rank to avoid having to take much responsibility?

A Captain, with his own company?

A Lieutenant General, with enough power to make real changes?

A First Sergeant, the top enlisted guy in a company?

A buck Sergeant, in charge of a group of enlisted soldiers, making things happen?

A Chief Warrant Officer, "the best rank in the army."

This may sound odd from somebody who is heading to the Sergeants Major Academy at the end of this month but my favorite rank was SSG.

I had more fun as a Sapper Squad Leader than all my other jobs put together. I was also a Drill Sergeant as a SSG and I enjoyed that job as well. The hours sucked and it was stressful trying to balance work and family, but I liked it.

I would never be a Commissioned Officer. I could write a book on that subject

Command Sergent Major, since based on my recollection they don't really do anything expect "drink coffee and growl."

For most of my term of service I wondered why the army even had CSMs. After all, they don't really seem to have any real job other than to gripe at first sergeants. Eventually I decided it was just a position they give to whomever has persevered through all the other army BS to the point where they deserve it.

Without a doubt Captain. Best job in the Army is a company commander of a line unit. You are under 30 years old and they call you "the old man." Hah! It was good to be KING!

Worst day of my career was when they pinned oak leaves on my collar and made me a major. Took my tanks and troops away from me and gave me a desk to make briefing slides for the CG. Lasted another year under Clinton and decided $42k a year wasn't enough to keep me flying a desk.

I had two company commands--nearly 3 years as a CO and they were the best in my 10 years of service.
Tank platoon leader was also a lot of fun with my first platoon sergeant. The second one I ended up pushing into rehab counseling for alcohol and it sucked.

Chief Warrant Officer. I was a SSG (E-6) for a few years before getting out and always wished that when I was a SGT (E-5) I had taken the opportunity to go take the WO OBC training to be Apache pilot. NCO's as they say are the "backbone" of the Army and the Officers are the planners, but WO's are a bit of both side ofthe fence. I would have liked a chance to be one and experience "both side of the fence" if you will.
