Sported Mauser,, a lot like the gun my dad used from 1952- 2010.. he built it himself with an FN barreled action.. very sweet, smooth action.. More accurate than most of us could shoot. Though one of my brothers shot one inch groups at a hundred yards with it, iron sights..
I remember seeing ‘98 Mauser for sale, $18, pre 1968… There has to be tens of thousands of them in closets all over this country..

I kind of doubt the "official" story. What assassin leaves his rifle behind- wrapped in a towel.....??
Ummm... the kind that doesn't want to be spotted running around with a rifle after shooting a high profile public figure.

Police Officer: "Hmmmm, I wonder if that dude running around with that rifle has anything to do with this? Nawwww, that's pretty far fetched."

And the "engraved ammo" story is ,well, pretty suspect.
Here we go again.
RIP Charlie.

Kinda hard to run for a vehicle near a college csmpus carrying a rifle right after a shooting. Being seen with it would add witnesses. Something a shooter doesn’t want.
Being caught with the murder weapon seals his fate.
Lots of killers ditch the murder weapon quickly so they won’t be caught with it.

But I bet he forgot to wipe down the back of the stock... left his palm print. Wipe the forend and grip... but not the back of the stock. Big slip.

If this is the rifle used to kill Kirk (ballistics will confirm that) then it is an old Mauser M95 in 30-06 (rechambered, it was at first in 7.65×53mm Argentine) and it is of .311-.313 bore, and not .308 but it is chambered for 30-06 hence the slugs are .308 bore not .311-313.

If so to be 200 yard accurate they needed to either use handloads using .311 (British .303) or true .313 Argentine slugs (they are still made) or maybe that is why it hit Kirk's neck... not very accurate.. I bet he aimed for his head.

We will see what the FBI ballistics team says.
