Tell me a good way to find a dentist. Haven't had much luck talking with friends or family.
Tried going to a new place (Aspen Dental?) and ended up walking out. Seemed more like a factory or a 10 minute oil change place. A young lady gave me a very brief exam and then the office/sales manager came to talk to me about setting up one of their gold star plans. Never got to talk to a dentist. It felt like I was at a used car lot.

So, how do you find about pricing and know if you are getting ripped off? Most of the dental insurance plans seem like a scam also. Anybody had good luck with one? it's not offered with my health insurance.

Once again, I appeal to the GT Fount of Knowledge.

Check with your insurance provider and get a list of the dentists in their network. Then pick one.

I second that recommendation. Though he's in Florida, be cautious when you go down there.

More and more dentist are going corporate which I don't care for at all. Exams get shorter to rush in more patients so on, and so forth. My dental hygienist was let go because she was spending too much time with her clients not getting enough people through that day. She left for a private practice and that's what I think I'll do too.

So my advise is look for a private practice that will take your insurance.

I can only give you advice as a senior. Stay away from the "big box" corporate dentists. They are a factory that pumps folks through as quick as possible. If they advertise on TV, stay away! Look for a local dentist that doesn't take dental insurance for seniors. My last dental exam with x-rays was $15. When you retire and go on Medicare, don't even think of dental insurance for seniors. This advice I got from my local dentist and receptionist. Total rip.

I've heard Aspen Dental uses attractive dental hygienist to sell you on the $5K worth of work that you really need to have done. You were wise to walk.

They take a bunch of comprehensive, full mouth X-rays to look for stuff to fix.
Then they take both before and after X-rays to show the insurance company that they fixed it.
How many x-rays can a person stand?

I don't have dental insurance, that was my question if anybody has a plan and are they worth while. Looking at Delta Dental Insurance, seems to be pretty hit or miss on reviews.

They keep prodding me for a full head scan of my mouth and I keep refusing. I'll only do bitewings.

Try the faculty practice group at your local dental school.
These are the guys who train other dentists, and can practice the latest techniques. They also have little incentive to upsell you.

In that case I'd ask people in your area who they recommend.

For insurance I have Delta Dental of Wisconsin through my work. It's not bad. Most dental insurance doesn't pay that great on things like crowns though.

Find one that is not taking new patients and then beg to be a new patient.
