Hi guys! I am going ice fishing in Minnesota for the weekend starting tomorrow. Much to my dismay, my Iowa CWP is not valid in Minnesota. I want to have some form of protection when Im there in my shanty so I am bringing my FNX .40.

Im using common sense for hauling it in the car. It will be unloaded, all magazines unloaded, in a hard case, ammo in separate bag. Magazines are both 14 rounders. Ammo is Winchester bonded hollowpoints. In the shanty I will have it loaded and in the hard case. I want to have it as I am so used to being armed at all times I dont like the thought of being completely disarmed.

So MN guys tell me- am I all within the law with my plans?

    Thanks!

It is illegal to shoot fish in Minnesota with a firearm. That's all I know from personal experience. HH

It is unlawful for any person to possess explosives of any kind. It is also against the law for any person to possess a firearm (including an air gun) unless the firearm is unloaded and completely contained in a fully enclosed gun case or unloaded and contained in the closed trunk of a vehicle. A person who is legally permitted under MS 624.714 to carry a handgun in the State of Minnesota may legally carry that handgun in state parks.

Short search of DNR regulations. All I have. Someone else may help more. Be very careful of the "State Parks" limitation.

#1. Find out if the area you are fishing in is inside the limits of a city or township.

#2. Find out if the lake/area is part of a Park (State/Federal/Municipal).

#3. If you are outside of a city/township "normally" Open Carry of a handgun w/o permit is lawful (think of "out in the woods/sticks").

#4. Concealed loaded guns w/o permit are generally illegal (outside of your residence/store/etc).

The lodge is NOT within city limits or any park. The shanty is out on the lake but I wont know where exactly until I get there. There are state parks NEAR the lake. Some are touching the lake but not anywhere near where the lodge is.

The part that gets me is the dwelling part. Is the shanty my dwelling? The gun wont be leaving the shanty unless its unloaded and in the case to come home.

Drat! Should have just gotten my Utah permit also. All of the states I travel to honor my permit and I havent been to MN in years.

    It's not a dwelling.

So what youre telling me is I shouldnt have it loaded at all? Should I just save myself the hassle and leave it home? Ack. I dont like the thought of being many miles from any help with what will probably be very spotty cell phone coverage completely defenseless.

Are you worried some criminal hood rat is going to drive an unknown distance to creep up on your ice shanty and steal your tip-ups?

I've met a lot of human filth in my career, they're not gonna jack an ice shanty. Three guys, a filet knife and a handle of whiskey should be all you need to be safe and comfortable.

In MN, it's an ice house.
It seems to be a shanty everywhere else.
No help I know, but you'll fit in better with the locals.

Depending on where you are fishing, it's not uncommon to have a DNR officer knock on your door.

Since you're predicting the future and all - can I get the Powerball numbers for tonight's drawing?

Point being - if he wants to go legally armed, then he can. Unless you can 100% predict the future, you never know what will happen, and if you'll need a gun. That'd be why I carry, no matter where I go. That includes hunting in the middle of nowhere, fishing on the lake, or just down the street to the grocery store.

Nick - listen to TBO....he might have somewhat of a clue regarding MN firearm laws. :whistling:

While i somewhat agree with that thought i disagree with that mentality. I have the belief that you should always be armed if allowed. My chances of ever needing a firearm are almost zero every day of my life. By that reasoning does that mean i should just not carry at all anymore?
