That there is no point in 10mm Auto at all anymore. He said that 40 SNW ammo can be loaded to duplicate full house 10mm balistics, that 40snw can do anything 10mm can do!

For the record.. I disagree.. Check my avatar..
But tell me if you can, is it actually possible with the RIGHT 40 setup..FS BBL, springs etc ?

This statement was made about 15 years ago. A lot of lead has crossed the berm, and both guns are still here.

For a long time I've heard that you can get pretty good velocity in 40S&W with Longshot. I just checked Hodgdon's website and it looks like you can load to 1150+ FPS with a 180gr projectile. That's not at the high end of 10mm 180gr loads, but it's also above the low end. Remember, that's the data that their lawyers will let them publish.

I know the ringers will chew me out for it, but I personally have no problem with 40snw, because of pistol ergonomics. But I STONGLY advocate 10mm. In the case of Glock I think hot loading 40 is a bad idea, but in a steel frame gun, or a smith 610 maybe not. I just don't know. A blanket statement that 10 is dead is obviously false.
Every g23 I've ever shot, I can write my name with at 35 ft. But a load from Underwood in a Glock 40 scares the $&!? Outa me with an unsupported bbl.

I remember someone doing some tests and determined that the .40 casing could theoretically withstand more pressure (in the right barrel/chamber) than 10mm could. (then again that particular chamber had been heavily reinforced)
Maybe if you're reloading by some of the publishers books and not using the best powder for the job, but I don't see a single manufacturer that actually loads 10mm near potential to load it to less than .40.
I don't have an issue with .40 either, but I much prefer to fire it from my glock 20 with a conversion barrel, as opposed to my uncle's glock 22. it's just nicer on my hands (especially since the carpal tunnel surgery)

I wouldn't worry too much about us 10 ringers, there's no issues with using the .40 if that's what you prefer, we just think it's silly if you can handle a real caliber :uglylol:

I don't reload yet, and I would never try this anyway, 40 SNW is a high pressure load to begin with. I'm thinking you might get some 10mm mid grade out of it...but...
Sure, but a mid grade 10mm is not a 10mm. It's a long 40cal. The power behind the same bullet is what makes the 10mm a 10mm.

I treat my 27 like a lot of guys treat a j frame SNW 38 Spl.
I carry and shoot full house 10mm for SD, and use the 27 for backup.
Serious hunting is a 629 8 inch, and 4 inch for backup.
Carried a g30 for many years, so a 29 wouldn't be a big switch but if I kicked up the loads for the g27, I would feel better. Backup loads had better work!

Why do people care about this ? Shoot each caliber, decide what feels best to you and which one you can afford. I've had both and personally like .40 better due to lower cost, follow up shot placement and ammo availability. I live in a decent size town and no one ever really had a good selection of 10mm ammo. I have also been told that off the shelf 10mm ammo is not full power ammo anyway. Just my thoughts.

Most factory 10mm ammo is 40snw power level anyway, the question is upgrading the 40 w/o kbooms. In the right gun.

your gunsmith is entitled to his opinion. opinions are like poopchutes, we all have one.
I reload, and have for probably thirty years.
I would no more load a forty to ten velocities than I would .38 to .357, 0r .44 special to .44 magnum.
I own and reload both calibers, as well as most common pistol. .380, 9mm, .38, .357, .44 special and magnum.
I will stay within the prescribed guidelines and do my best to not produce a hand held grenade.
reloading is not like baking a cake. if the cake is not good, you throw it away and laugh, if the pressure generated by a reload is too high, Katie bar the door! it is all fun and games until someone looses an eye!
10mm has become a favorite of mine over the last two years. it is a powerful round, and can be used for personal protection as well as many hunting applications. just pick the ammunition for the task at hand.
cost to reload 10mm is minimally higher than .40. once you have a good supply of brass, the only difference is a higher powder charge. if I had to purchase all my 10mm, I would need Donald Trumps budget.

I openly disagreed with him at the time. I am not sure if he had fired full house 10mm at the time, I think the 40 was pushed for law enforcement obviously wanting a compromise between 9 and 45.
The point is LE couldn't adjust to real 10, so they dialed it down. From what I have shot, read and seen it is far easier to adjust the 10.

The first 10mm I ever seen fired was a full power Norma load from a 1006.
Guy locked the lid down on a 5 gallon clearing bucket full of play sand and fired it into the bucket. Lid came off and flipped up into the air. I fell in love, and bought a Colt DE, blued.
Regardless of popular opinion and all joking aside, if you're talking a normal semi auto cartridge, if you require a cartridge that can be jack of all trades, 10 is a tough contender.

it is.
the 10mm may be loaded to the low end of the scale and produce high end .40 results, or pushed to a level production .40 pistols would be unsafe, to say the least.

I own both a G-27 and a G-29. That heavy slide in the G-29 makes a BIG difference. I have the wider/heavier model of the G29. That little G-27 stings my hand firing 180 grain rounds. The G-29 has a different feel to it completely. The shock is felt more in my shoulder and does not hurt.

I bought a 10mm to .40 caliber conversion barrel for my G29. I discovered that firing heavy 180 gr. .40 caliber rounds feels almost the same as firing super powerful 115 gr. 1700 fps Underwood ammo out of the same gun.

The 10mm is now my CCW. 40 caliber ammo fired out of the same weapon is my practice weapon.

You're right. Just like the 357, you can make it weak or strong. The 40 has a smaller window. A nice window, but narrower. I wish 10 would get more popular cause I don't have much money for the good stuff.

And my man hits the nail on the frikking head! Thanks bro!
The window of acceptable to hell no is far more narrow in 40 than say 44 Spl to magnum. So I don't see how it's possible to push the 40 that far WITHOUT something very negative happening.
