I Want in the Glock Business

Hello,
I am new to the glock forum, but an old gun guy. I have a lot of experience with smith and wesson revolvers, 1911's, bolt action rifles, both centerfire and rimfire, as well as shotguns. I am certainly not and have never been a gun snob based on brand or type. I think there is a place for all guns and believe they all fill one need or another. With that in mind, I want a new glock. I am impressed with what I read of its simplicity, durability, and reliability. I figure if the state police in my home state trust it, thats good enough for me. I have it narrowed down to a 17, 19, 22, or 23. I am open to getting whichever of these I can find the best deal on. My question is, for a guy who has several revolvers and 1911's, what niche would I use my new glock for? Concealed carry? Truck/car gun? Will I fall in love with this gun to the point it will replace some of my other handguns? These are rhetorical questions I am asking myself, and I know it would be hard for you guys to answer them for me, but I am certainly open to your ideas and suggestions. I am not sure what my primary use for this gun will turn out to be----I guess I will experiment around and let nature take its course. Thanks to all---------I have found glock talk to be a great forum.

welcome to GT !!!!! get the 19
My choice would be the 23. It will become a favorite but no glock can replace the simple beauty of a nice revolver or a 1911.
Go to a range that rents multiple Glock models and try them out.

Good luck on your purchase. All Glocks are nice!!!!
1911s are great and I still own them and love them...the Glocks will fill a similar role IMO but have on average a larger capacity.

That's the main draw for me, as I have always been satisfied with the performance of my 1911s otherwise. Well, the ones I kept, anyway!
G17 or G19. Will add G21 if you let me include it on the list.
Welcome....:wavey:

Start with the G23. It will make a great carry pistol. And a great truck piece.

But I am warning you, whichever one you start with you will be pleased with it and you will have the other 3 you mentioned within a year!

There is a ton of info on this site. And some real good people here to help whenever you need it.

Keep us posted on what you decide.

It depends upon your application....

If concealment is not a concern, and just want to shoot quite a bit, get the 17 or a 34.

If concealment is a concern, get the 19 if you are shooting a lot - if you are CCW and shooting enough to remain proficent (but not a lot, or you reload) get the 23 - the .40 caliber really is more effective than a 9mm for SD.

If concealment is a major concern, get the 26.

The Glock really is a tool - intended to be used "day in and day out" and remain reliable - rain, snow, hot, cold, dirt, sand - crawl under a car or house. It is not a work of art that must have the fingerprints wiped off every time it is touched.
Welcome to GT!

I think the first thing that I would recommend is handle them, rent them, shoot them. There are a lot of things to consider between the 17/22 and the 19/23. Obviously, first question is do you want a 9 or a .40?

If you are looking at buying new, then you've got to decide what feels better in your hand. I have a 2nd Gen 23, which does not have the finger grooves and I love it. The 3rd Gen 19/23, which has the finger grooves, I hate because my fingers don't fit in the grooves. I have no problem with the 3rd Gen 17/22 because the finger grooves are wider and my hand fits.

The compacts are more concealable, which is why my first gun ever was the 23. Now, I carry a 27 because I can easily conceal the sub compact in shorts & t-shirt, which I can't with the 23 (I can conceal it with a t-shirt, but it's much more likely to print).

So, to decide which is the right model for you, you have to handle them AND decide what you want it for before you buy. If the 19/23 fits your hand, then choose a caliber and go for it, because the one thing that seems to be agreed upon here is that those are the workhorses. Those are the 2 most popular models.

The other question is, do you want to stick with .45? Have you considered the 21 or 30?

Oh, and yes, you will like it enough that it will replace one of your other guns. Then you will buy more Glocks and they will replace the rest of your guns!

Just a few thoughts. Good luck with your decision!

I appreciate all of your input so far. I am very impressed with what I read about the glock pistol and am looking forward to giving this great pistol a try. I will let you know how it turns out.
I think a lot of it has to do with how they feel to you, and how well they shoot. As a .45 guy with larger hands the 1911 has always filled the bill on the concealed carry side for me. But, I shoot my G21 better than my full size Kimber because the large frame of that Glock just fits better for me.

I say go out and handle a couple, and as someone else suggested shoot a few. Once you have the feel down select the caliber you want.

If it is just between the models that you specified My .02 would be either the 17 or the 19.

This! that being said.. i love my 19.. not as big as the 17 and it feels sooooo good in my hands. 26 is great for carrying
I think the 19/23 is the best overall size of all the Glocks. It fills the hand but is not too small and it conceals fairly well. It's double stack makes it thicker than your 1911 but nearly double the round count is the point.

You should shoot both the 9mm and the .40. The recoil profile with the .40 is not excessive but has a very fast impulse that some find uncomfortable. Both will get the job done.

If you like the .45 acp you might look at a G30. Similar in size to the 19/23 but with a single stack magazine.
Welcome to GT! I would say that we really need a definitive role for which you intend to use the Glock. I know that may be a difficult question to answer as you have no idea as to its capabilities but is there a role that you need filled? The 19 or 23 is an excellent choice for concealed carry as well as truck gun. The 34 is a top choice for range/plinking gun. My personal suggestion would be to get the 19 as it is such a versatile gun and considered by many to be the best model Glock has produced. The 23 is great if you like .40, plus with the 23 you can buy a 9mm and .357 conversion barrel that simply drop in to the 23's frame giving you 3 guns in 1 frame. Good luck with your decision and keep us informed!
WELCOME! as stated above, without knowing the role the gun will play in your dailey life it will be very hard to make a suggestion. All glocks are great and each appeals to someone in a certain way. No matter which one you pick you will be very please. Check your local gun shop and hold them ALL!
I own the 19 and love it, but I'll eventually own them all. I only chose 19 over the 17 because it was easier to conceal, and then over the 23 because I wanted to shoot it, a lot, and 9mm was less expensive.

What part of KY are you from? If you're in the Northern part, I can recommend a shop that has all four of those guns for rent. Not too expensive either.
How could you NOT want a 30 ? Come on now.
After about your thousandth round, it'll occur to you that you haven't had one malfunction and you'll wonder why you would ever think about carrying a lesser firearm ever again. And it will also occur to you that with any of those Glocks on your list, you have double or triple the rounds you were comfortable with in a six-shooter or 1911 in a package that is more concealable and lighter than all the rest.
Google GSSF. If you join you get a certificate for a substantial discount. Better yet, see if you qualify for the Homeland Defense discount (LEO or Military to name two qualifiers). Glocks are great. Glocks at a discount are even better!
The G19 is the one to get because it can do everything a full size service pistol can do and then some!
