...but I don't want to pay $1000 or more for one. I want one of the heavy ones that I can smoke ribs on. I know I would have to get someone who welds to make me one. Does anyone have any suggestions or plans that they used to make their own?

I got this at Lowes, $130 bucks... It's not heavy duty but I'll get my moneys worth from it.... I love it...

The Brinkman barrel style grills at Wal_mart are pretty good. I have hade one for about 7 years and have more than gotten my money's worth out of it. I have used it for grilling and smoking with great success. About $140 without the firebox, add $35 or so for it.

The firebox is optional. I got one with mine and haven't used it as much as I thought I would.

You could also look at Academy sports if there is one near you. They sell sojme pretty heavy duty charcoal cookers, but they run around $500 or so.
