I've always been intrigued with this round. I've shot a rifle in .308, but it was long ago and it was a single shot (Remington, I think). I've been looking around at some rifles, but there are lots of options out there. Whatever I get, I'd like to have it set up for mid-long range. Semi-auto is great, but I'm afraid it's out of the price consideration. I'm looking at the $500-$700 range. Ideas?

Well a savage bolt is in that price range, but your gonna have to spend a lot on optics.
Saiga 308, you might be able to get one for that price range but I have no idea about the accuracy of a Saiga 308. My Saiga 762X39 get ok accuracy out to 300 yards(meaning I can hit a man size target at 300 yards) Look around for a while you might find a SA 308 for 1000.00 either at a private sale or a pawn shop.

Not to long ago I walked into my local gun store an saw a federal arms .308. It was 650 an I made an impulse buy. I read into it after an it seems to be a good buy. Its easy to find parts of it, cheeperthendirt.com has a most of them. I have only shot it a few times but once I got my scope sighted in its a great shooter. I had to tweek a few things on mine but that was b/c of the last owner I am sure. I don't see you finding one it your price range.

If you can stash back a tad more DPMS AR-10's are $899 around here new and about 750-800 used. If not you CANNOT beat a savage for price/accuracy get the accu-trigger and spend your extra $$$ on a decent scope!

    Savage model 10 FCP-K.
Accutrigger, Accustock, detachable box magazine, fluted 24 inch barrel, beaver tail foreend,
muzzle break. For around $700.00 it is a lot of rifle !

You might want to go over to www.auctionarms.com and just check out the SA 308 section, do the Same at gunbroker.com You'll get an idea of cost and get to see a lot of 308s free. I wouldn't buy any off either board but its a good research site. You might also check out Guns America, and any Pawn shops you have in the your AO. Watch the papers as sometimes you will see a deal listed.
heres one link to the Saiga

I was really considering the NEF Handi-Rifle to get into .308 cheaply.

Then I lost control and got a DPMS LR 308B. Dang it. There went the 2010 gun budget.

Do you already have a scope and the accoutraments? If not, save a couple hundred bucks and get a ready-to-shoot package. Sniper Central has a Howa with scope, bipod, etc. for about a grand.

    http://www.snipercentral.com/entrypackage.htm

The Remington 700 for a little more.

    http://www.snipercentral.com/rementrypack.phtml

If you spend $500 on a rifle (a used Rem 700, a Howa, or Savage), another couple hundred (at least) on optics, a hundred for a decent base and rings, you are talking $800-$950 anyway.

If you want the rifle only, look on Gun Broker and Guns America for OK prices, but check on Sniper Central and Sniper Country for some decent deals.

Not a bad gun, but I think the Rem 700 with the 5R barrel is much more accurate.

    This thread is totally crazy!!!

You want any rifle capable of firing a .308 Win?

Classic MBRs, bolt guns, Saiga/AR-10... a Handi Rifle???

What are you going to do with it?

I just like the .308 round and have no experience with it.

I have no optics or accessories. I liked the "turn key" aspect of the Mossberg ATR with the scope, brake, bipod, and cammo stock, but heard bad things about it.

My BIL has a .223 Howa full floater. However I cannot seem to find the same rifle in .308. I'd prefer a rifle for long-range shooting, but would take a battle rifle version if it could still be set up with optics and stay in my price range.
