I own a Colt AR-15 SP1 I have not shot it in close to 20 years. I have always used 223 ammo. A friend gave me some winchester 55gr 5.56. Is it ok to use the 5.56? Thanks Alex

Should be no problem with a Colt SP1.

Does it say 5.56 on the barrel? I don't know the specifics on the SP1.

This. I believe all Colts are chambered 5.56mm but check the lower and the barrel to make sure it says that.

It says colt AR-15 Cal 223 Model SP1. I can't find Any marks on the barrel. I took off the heat shields and still can't find any marks

I wouldn't go by whats on the lower. Mine says .223 on the lower and 5.56 on the barrel.

If it's a true SP1 you can use either one.

I bought mine brand new in 1982 when I was 18. I only shot maybe 600 rounds. It also doesn't have the forward assist. I don't think I would ever sell it. Its one of the few things I still have from the time in my life. I also bought a AP-74 Jagger 22LR. I still have that too. That was the AR look a like and much cheeper to shoot. Now if I only still had that 1981 Black Trans-AM.

Read the barrel. I think Colts are always chambered for 5.56 though.

It just keeps getting better, don't it?
I've shot 5.56 through my SP-1 upper. Not a problem at all. It's a military rifle and made to handle the 5.56, not the civilian 223.

Just remember you can use .223 in 5.56; but it doesn't work so well the other way.
