Just because it was the only 9mm ammo in the store. I've been stopping by Big 5 every time I get paid and buying a couple of boxes to put away, they've always had Fiocchi, the RWS and some cheap generic steel case but today they were clean out of everything else. The manager said the ammo shipments "have been dwindling lately," so he couldn't tell me if or when they'd be getting more 9mm in.

I thought the ammo shortage was over? That's what the internet told me!

I've noticed more ammo available (vs previous year) in the stores - except for 380 auto.

    For that price, buy online.

I've never seen decent prices at Big 5. They consistently have the highest ammo prices in town. I avoid them like the plague.

As far as the ammo shortage being over... not quite. Rifle ammo prices and availability have pretty much returned to what they were pre-election. But handgun ammo is still expensive and harder to find than it was before the 2008 presidential election.

Is the RWS 9mm 124gr. any good? A local department store sells it for $24.99 a box! They sometimes have WWB for $20/100rds so of course I buy that. I was wondering why the RWS is so expensive.

Me too, the usual price at Big 5 is $27.99! I stop by Big 5 on the way home from work on payday because it's in the same lot as my park n' ride, but I really need to find a good online ammo supplier.

For anything other than maybe bulk pack .22LR you will usually find the best deal online even with shipping charges.

In Cincinnati WallyMart, RWS 9X19 124 Grain FMJ 50 rounds = $16.97. I didn't buy because it's not something that I need or want. Nothing wrong with RWS - they make some premium stuff.

You live in a location that may have higher costs for taxes or transport or whatever. I rarely buy ammo at retail stores - unless someone like Bass Pro or Wally is having a super sale. The only way to buy ammo IMO, is on the NET or preferrably at the GUNSHOW! Most online retailers have MUCH better deals than your $38.00/100.

I stay away from Big 5, I once bought 2 50rd boxes of Remington UMC .40 from them at $25 a box, and later find at wally world the same brand 250rd value pack for $70. $20 more for another 150rds. What the hell is Big 5 smoking? I understand price mark up to make a little profit but 100 rds of target .40 for $50? Thats self defense ammo prices. On the other hand, they do have some good sales on guns from time to time.

That's insane. It's $9.97 here in Arkansas Wal-Mar stores. Winchester white box 100's are $19.

RWS is fine ammo, but you are buying w/ deflated US $$ for a Euro product.
The ammo shortage is subsiding a bit, but still in play. No stores around here have ammo in the common calibers. I'm glad I reload.

its unlikely to subside anytime soon unless you see alll the new guns the peeps bought not getting hungry. its a supply demand problem that wont be solved anytime soon unless capacity is expanded.

infact its mostly handgun ammo and i have seen a rash of firstime gun buyers in the last month so IMHO its going to get worse.
