http://news.yahoo.com/congress-looks-doing-away-1-bill-083418974--politics.html I also hope they nuke the penny. Several good reasons: 1. A dollar is worth about what a quarter was when I was a kid. Buy a Coke? Coin. Piece of candy? Coin Tip to the cabbie? Coin 2. Pennies are almost worthless. They cost more to make than they are worth. Much like the "thousandths of a dollar" on gas prices ($3.599 per gallon), the penny represents a fraction of a dollar (1/100) that can't buy anything. Get rid of it. 3. Eliminating both would leave us with the smallest bill in our pocket as a $5. 1/100 of that would be the nickel. And, the dollar coin would represent 1/5 of the $5, similar to how our current quarter is 1/4 of our current dollar bill. Thus, we would be left with a similar mixture of bills and coins as thirty years ago, while eliminating the expense and hassle of circulating the smallest bill (that has the buying power of a coin) and the, almost literally, worthless penny.
