Wife just called and asked if I wanted her to stop by Captain D's and bring me lunch. Something must be in the offing...

Hushpuppies AND slaw for me. Though it's hard to find a good hushpuppy these days. Real hushpuppies ARE NOT sweet! What most places serve today are some kind of bastardized bite size cornmeal pastry.

I don't care for sweet hush puppies or cole slaw that is too mayonnaisey.

Hushpuppies = fried onion flavored donut hole.

Ok, want some good ones? Gather round class, here is what you do.

Find a Food Lion or other market that sells

    House-Autry Hushpuppy mix WITH ONION!

Make them in a mixing bowl according to directions. Then
Add a couple of teaspoons of Old Bay seasoning or chicken spice like you'd put on fried chicken. Or a teaspoon of curry, a tsp of garlic salt and a 1/2 tsp of ground red pepper.

    But this is best:

Scoop em with a tablespoon, roll it into about a golf ball size and deep fry them in PEANUT Oil:

There you have it. Get em nice and brown and have em mouth burning hot, straight out of the fryer. mmmmmmgoood. DownSouth Good.

How did hushpuppies vs. slaw become an issue? When you have steak do you decide between bread or a potato? I have hushpuppies and slaw - but I'm not from the north.

    House autry = The BOMB!

    Chicken breader,

The new equivalent to shake and bake and my first love,

    Their BISCUIT MIX!

And of course the hushpuppies with onion.

Don't forget to add the Old Bay, its a game changer.

Yes, I love the Captain's okra!

I remember Arthur Treacher's, Peach. There was one close to my old office in Decatur. They seem to be just an Ohio phenom now. http://www.treachers.com/
