Hey does anyone know if it's legal to hunt small game with a .40 caliber handgun? Coons, oppossums, etc.

    Which state?

In NY it is as long as the barrel is under 6" or is not semi auto.

<--- still waiting for a deer to get close enough to hit with G23.

    Edit:

    I was wrong.

It is unlawful to hunt big game with:

    * A firearm or bow aided by any artificial light or a laser that projects a beam toward the target.
    * An autoloading firearm with a capacity of more than 6 shells (one which requires that the trigger be pulled separately for each shot), except an autoloading pistol with a barrel length of less than 8 inches.

    Taken from HERE

    And for small game:

It is illegal to take or hunt wildlife:

    * with any semi-automatic firearm with a capacity to hold more than 6 rounds, except:
o firearms using .22 or .17 caliber rimfire ammunition or,
o firearms altered to reduce their capacity to no more than 6 shells at one time in the magazine and chamber combined, or
o autoloading pistols with a barrel length of less than eight inches.

    From HERE

That depends on your location and local hunting laws.

Still wrong. Yes, you quoted the right stuff about semi-autos, but you left out the part that says the pistol has to have a barrel less than or equal to 16".

Thompson Contender had a super 16 single shot pistol. It was determined to be illegal to hunt with in NYS in zones where centerfire rifle hunting was not allowed, because it was actually 16.25 inches (or there abouts). And I mention, not to be picky, but for this very fact.

I hunt with an 8" revolver. I've thought about a Contender, but need to know it has to be less than or equal to 16".

    http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/28182.html
"Handgun-is any pistol or revolver intended to be aimed and fired with one hand, and having a barrel length not exceeding 16 inches."

I guess I knew that but had forgotten.

Isn't NY law that a handgun had to have a bbl 16" or shorter, otherwise it would be a pistol grip rifle, aka illegal. I will have to double check the laws.:)

Page 7 of your regulations book says nothing larger than .22 rimfire for small game. Sorry

But you can hunt deer with it.

Pistol grip rifle is not illegal.

A rifle needs to have 16" or longer barrel, and overall length not less than 26". Otherwise it is a firearm, which is essentially the same thing as a pistol, in NYS law word usage.

Shotgun barrel has to be at least 18".
