i carry the flagging because i use it to mark large trees so i can find my way back at night with my compass and flashlight using the trees as bearing points...

i got to get a gps soon...

Okay that make since.I've seen them hanging on trees and ocassionaly paint marks but never paid attention to them. I also like the compas also and use local lamdmarks ( water holes.power line grades,streams.trails... ) for references and on a few ocassion I would mark my drirection on the path/trail and also had to use my tracking of my "footprint" in the water mud to just make sure I did come down that trail.

    {i got to get a gps soon...}

GPS is great, when it works, but no good without batteries, in heavy clouds and slow in heavy brush overhead.

You can fix almost anything with survey ribbon and stakes, that stuff is better than duct tape.

My ol' pappy always told me to take:

    Matches,
    Knife,
    and Toilet Paper.

You're right, you should be able to get by without it but it sure is nice. I've never had problems with it in cloud cover, and in all but the thickest trees you should be able to get a position. I don't hardly use a compass anymore.

    At the farm:
    buck knife
    calls
    coon urine
    rope
    compass
    flashlight (2)
saw (can be attached to a long stick)
    light gloves
    deer urine
    shoe lace (string)

    Up North I also carry:
    strike anywhere matches
    whistle

I don't have a GPS but wished I had a couple of times. Once when my compass failed and once when I found the best hunting spot and could not find my way back to it with my tree stand.

gluck, you saved the thread, i didnt think anyone would mention TP. Where would i be with out that after early morning breakfast and coffee? I also have two knives, not sure why. Latex gloves, i dont mind deer blood, always did it bare handed but it just doesnt seem wise, especially in cold december when my hands are all dry and chapped. Oh, and a plastic garbage bag all folded up. Not sure why, it just seemed like a good idea, and in one downpour it was priceless draped over to pine branches over head.
