    Dog Shoots Hunter

LOS BANOS, Calif. (CBS) -- A hunter is recovering from non-life threatening injuries after being shot by his dog on Saturday.

The Merced County Sheriff's Department said the 53-year-old man was hunting with a partner off Highway 152 near Los Banos when he set down his shotgun to retrieve his decoy ducks.

The shotgun was loaded but the safety was on, according to authorities.

The victim was about 15 yards away, retrieving his decoys, when his female black Labrador retriever stepped on the gun.

Authorities said the dog disengaged the safety and hit the trigger at the same time, firing a shell with #2 shot. The man was struck in on the left side of his upper back.

The man was treated and released at the hospital the same day.

Well, don't lay it down and point it in the direction you are walking, I guess.

Common sense. Whatever happened to it?

I wonder how many of these 'dog shot me' stories are really coverups for 'my hunting buddy (or I) was screwing around and shot me but we agreed to blame the dog' stories...

I don't think I own a shotgun that a dog could step on, disengage the safety and pull the trigger all at once, but stranger things have happened I guess.

Remington 870 if laid on it's left side would leave the safety button facing up. Dog steps on trigger guard and disengages safety, then foot slides and it pulls the trigger.

    Very possible to happen.

Can't see it happening with my Mossberg 500 and the tang safety.

I heard on the radio today that the cop put the dog down when he got there or something like that. I would be PISSED!

    Any truth to this?
