My 16 year old son shot a pretty nice doe right at sunlight opening day. She was looking straight on at him and he hit her in the throat, didn't mess up any meat whatsoever, our freezer needs it big time. We don't hunt horns, don't pass em up either but we're all about the meat. Good stuff.

1 large doe so far. Modern gun opens in a week, may or may not go out for it. I don't need more in the freezer. Last year I got 4 (1ea. with bow, rifle, pistol, flintlock, just to see if I could "do it all" in one season). Still have most of the last one in the deep freeze at the start of this years season. We normally eat two a year, so..

But I do love being in the woods..

I live in rural central Tejas and for the last 10 years on the first day of deer season for guns you can hear the gun fire all over the place. This year hardly none. I don't know what the deal is because there are big healthy deer all over the place. I cannot remember seeing racks on the bucks like this year. They are huge and with the rut starting those big bucks really look mean all swollen in the neck and all.

Not worth a darn. The deer just aren't there. The populations have been declining for a few years now. I have been out over a dozen days and I have only seen deer once. There were 5 in a group across the field. I could hear one grunting but couldn't make out the rack. They got spooked before they moved my way.

I think poaching is putting a hurting on the herds. We found one in the pond last summer with a bullet wound but the DEC didn't care at all. :steamed:

    Sorry about that.
You wouldn't want to get caught poaching in Texas....As it should be.
Our hunters have built the Deer herds to bigger, better and healther numbers than ever I can remember.

    I am a 61 year old Carnivore.

Good. I killed a nice 7-point with my muzzel loader. One shot, one kill. He never even kicked.

In Southeast NM the game and fish dept has been CORRUPTED by envirmentalist on the state board, they dont want mountain lions killed and therefore the lions get all the deer. Twenty years ago we had a great herd, deer everywhere, not anymore, most people are lucky to see 1 buck on a 3 day hunt.

I've got does all around me, but very few bucks that are "shootable" since we try to leave those below 8 pts and 15" alone for the future.

I've got one buck in the freezer, and will be adding numerous does over the next 7 weeks... and any big bucks I can find.

We are seeing more fawns this year than we have in years past, which is great for the future. The 'yotes have been quieter around here over the past year, which has made a big difference.

Got my spot picked out this past weekend. Opening day is the 13th.

Been making deer jerky this past week from the leftover venison from last years kill.

Gotta get that freezer filled back up with some fresh meet.
