The Gen 4 and the G26 and G27 have dual recoil springs. All Glocks have captured recoil springs. Captured means the spring is attached to the guide rod.

My Gen2 G22 does not. Nor do any of my Gen3's.

My Gen 2 G17 the spring comes off. I bought this gun new pre-ban and have been the only owner. Its unmodified and it comes off. I did it yesterday to see if I had went crazy or something. I have replaced the spring a couple of times but not the guide rod.

I'm not doubting you; I don't own a Gen2 17. But I AM reporting that my preban Gen2 G22 does NOT come off. And I am the only owner of that one.

The REAL POINT here, getting back to the OP, is the springs can tell you if it's Gen3 or Gen4, but only because the Gen4 is a dual; both are captured.

    All the Gen1 models had non-captured RSAs (Gen1 G17, G17L, and the few G19 Gen1s I've seen photos of).

Early Gen2 models had non-captured RSAs (I have a Gen2 G17 that came that way from the factory, and also owned a Gen2 G19 set up that way, once), but later Gen2 models got captured springs. I'm not sure of the cut-off date or serial number range where the changeover occurred.

Gen3 and later should all have captured RSAs.

Guess I had a senior moment, once you said that about the dual spring it clicked for me.

Well my Gen2 was made in '94, and is captured, so by '94 they were captured...

No worries! It happens to all of us "more experienced" members! :D
