Definitions, for purposes of this thread:

Minor malfunction: Anything fixed by immediate action.
Immediate action: Tap, rack, re-asses (sometimes referred to as tap-rack-bang).
Major malfunction: Anything not fixed by -immediate- action, but fixed by remedial action.
Remedial action: Remove magazine, tilt gun so ejection port is facing somewhat towards ground, rack slide forcefully several times, insert new magazine and chamber new round
Nuclear malfunction: A handloaded kaboom...just kidding (though that would qualify probably), any malfunction not fixable by immediate or remedial action, resulting in the gun being inoperable for the time being


So, how often do you get a malfunction that requires remedial action to fix, and is fixed by remedial action?

If possible, answer only for the use of a quality pistol such as a Glock handgun, quality mags (such as Glock factory or Magpul), and FACTORY ammunition.



For my part, I've been shooting longer than I've been a member here, and I don't think I have ever once exerienced a single malfunction with a Glock pistol that was not fixed by immediate action.

I've seen two nuclear malfunctions as you described. Both with reloads.
I've seen guns break and not function on the range, but nothing real catastrophic, they just stopped feeding or firing.
I've had one real life double feed (Gen 1 Glock 21 with all plastic mags).
Tap, rack, bang fixes 99+%.

^^^pretty much what the op summed up. I've only been shooting Glocks for a little over 3 years and the only 'issues' have been operator problems after firing a few hundred rounds in one session.

18 years ago...Taurus .380 semi purchased new. Less than 50 rounds, gun stopped firing while plinking, remove mag, check chamber, small flat piece eventually falls out and gun no go bang ever again. Trade gun with full disclosure to work buddy for onkyo home receiver. Buddy sends gun back to Taurus mother ship, repairs made and gun still firing today and is his wife’s carry gun (and she is proficient with it).

All guns can break, but I haven’t owned a Taurus since then. Not opposed to Taurus, but I just haven’t owned one since and that story does come to mind.

Honestly, I don't remember having any malfunction in a center fire pistol since I started reloading and got my loads set. I made a squib very early on, learned from it, and haven't had any more. Minor malfunctions with cheap factory ammo were not rare. My .22 pistol has a dislike for a certain brand of ammo and chokes two or three times in a 10-round magazine with it, but runs right through anything else.

I've only had one nuclear malfunction with my 14 Glocks in 27 years.

USPSA match in 2006. Glock 17 Gen 3. Production class. Unmodified, except for Glock extended mag release, Glock extended slide lock lever, and Glock "-" connector. Winchester USA white box 115's.

Failure to feed in the middle of a magazine. Slide would not retract, magazine would not drop normally. I had to rip the mag out. BTW, this Gen 3 had the grip cut outs for grasping the mag like the new Gen 5's do. Thank goodness.

The only thing I can come up with is that I only cleaned the 17 with a bore snake. I was not cleaning the feed ramp between matches. Needless to say I've done a much better job cleaning my Glocks after every outing since then.

Never had one in many years. The only malfunction I have ever had was when I bought 3 cheap Korean mags. But I all ways use good ammo also.

One major malfunction from a kinked extractor depressor plunger spring. My fault. I've witnessed one Glock blow up from reloaded ammo- not the gun's fault.

On my most shot firearm my G17 I have had 2 one with Monarch Aluminum & the other with Winchester White Box ( I am lucky I caught it and did not blow my gun up. I was doing a qualification and I am glad I was able to finish with my G19)

If I had to pick a number for Glocks, it would be about 1/80k rounds, and the cause would be worn mag springs' inability to overcome fouling and foreign material in the mag.

My S&W M-28 locked up on me twice with 125gr JHP's. My Olympic Arms AR-15 had a couple of failures to eject that required a trip to the gunsmith. Other than those two guns, smooth sailing.....

A rifle with a STUCK case is the one example I can think of that I have seen in which neither immediate or remedial action would fix the problem quickly.

AR type rifles firing something like Tulammo .223 is a good way to find out how stuck a case can get, or so it seems...hasn't happened to me yet ha

Twice.

A Springfield Armory 1911 which had a very short chamber leade, and a 230-gr cast reload that was too long. The ogive jammed into the rifling and it had to be pounded apart to eject the round. Slide anchored against a railroad tie and some real hard whacks on the grip to break it loose.

And a Hand-Rifle in .223 Remington that got a 68-gr 5.56mm round into the chamber and closed the action. That took a steel cleaning rod pounded so hard onto the bullet nose that it split the female threaded end of the rod like it was hit with an axe.

I saw the OEM polymer adjustable rear sight break into pieces when a G34 fell off the bench onto the concrete floor. Is that supposed to happen with a brand new Glock? It wasn't even loaded.

That's your reminder that the sights Glocks ship with are meant to be replaced I guess lol
