The Adam 12 thread had something that made me think of this.

How many of you wanted to be a cop, even as a kid?

Me, I wanted to be career Army (Green Beret) because of the John Wayne movie. I graduated high school during the post-Vietnam/Jimmy Carter era and the military was in a very low state. I chose not to go into the mess it was then. I tinkered with the idea of Law Enforcement from junior college days on until I took the plunge at age 22. I loved it right off and I still do. But I have to admit, with retirement approaching, I'm REALLY looking forward to that.

I'm pretty sure I knew I was going to be a cop at 14. I signed up for the Police Ride Along program in Hawaii and spent quite a few shifts riding out in Kailua.

And, I did...Kept my nose clean, didn't do drugs or exceptionally stupid stuff and, at 24 became a Reserve. 2 years later went full time at the same Department.

For a total of 32 years there.

I did everything I ever wanted to do. Worked the worst parts of town. The bars. Got in fights, tore up uniforms, pursuits, blew up transmissions and engines. I was on SWAT for 12 years through the meth lab era and then crack.

    Just an absolute rush....

Wanted to be an FBI agent, since 4th grade.

    Life had other plans.

I wish I could have been a "Dirty Harry", but that's only in the movies.

I had the bug from the time I was 12 years old. After working in other career fields and through my enlistment in the Army, I followed my dream. I can start burning my comp/sick/vacation time December 5 and get my first retirement check on April 1, but I'm probably going to keep on working. I love this job and doubt that I will ever find anything as fulfilling.

    Since I was a kid....

And even now, nearing the end of my third decade in this job, I still like coming to work, and I still see and learn new things...

Where I grew up, the cops were the bad guys. I NEVER wanted to be a cop! Never had a positive interaction with a cop until I began to work with the Drug Task Force and Crime Stoppers as an adult teacher. I started and ran the CS program in our school district and serviced all of the task force vehicles.

Never thought I'd live past 21YO and, if things hadn't changed, that prophecy would have been fulfilled. 21 came and went, so it was time to plan a life. I got married. My God, what a mistake that was!

Never had a role model to emulate. Growing up was a hit or miss. It took a while, but things ended up pretty well!

I wanted to be a Soldier. Planned everything around that, even had backup plans way back in high school. Had everything accounted for, except peace. Left the Army when it did its traditional post-war (in this case post Cold War and Gulf I) shrinkage and here I still am.

I hadn't thought anything about it until I got out of the USMC 1959 (age 21).
Then I joined the Baltimore Police Department.

    Talk about an education.
Being a 5 ft 7 inch white Policeman, walking the streets, all alone, at 2 AM, in the black Ghettos is an experience like no other.

    It's not possible to do..........
but I think everyone should spend some time as a Policeman.
There's nothing like it to learn about people....and about yourself.

Always wanted to since I was a kid. When I was a kid my mom hated guns and cops. I left the day after graduation for boot camp and learned all I could about guns. Got out and went straight into the police academy.

I love the job. And while it’s a ways awa, I’m really looking forward to retiring. I’m hoping by the time I get there the pendulum will have swung on the way police and authority is treated and looked at

Dad started at 21, a year before I was born. He was chief of his small (10 officer) department 7 years later.

Nothing other than being a municipal patrol cop ever even popped on the radar.

Started as a dispatcher at 18, made my bones for 4 years doing that before doing 4 years at that same agency. Left to go to the bigger (70 cops) and very busy town bordering to the south. 20 years later, I'm still here. I'm an admin now, but manage to spend at least half my time on the street (much to the chagrin of the sergeants). I still love going to work, and I'm now 3 years past retirement eligibility and won't leave...until I get another cop job that won't screw up my pension (NJ).

Guilty as charged; it was the only thing I ever wanted to do. If I hadn't had a financial gun to my head I would not have retired.

    Here too.

My dad was a Police Officer in Dalton, IL when I was a child. That set the tone for my life.

I always did, just took a while to get through college. So I got a later start. Wish I would’ve started earlier.

Pretty much. My neighbor growing up was a cop, and my oldest brother, 8 years my senior, always had the bug, too. We became a cop at 18, I followed along 11 years later. Never remembered wanting to do anything else.

Always was intrigued by the Secret Service after I saw JFK in '62. Did it in '75-76.
Always liked the idea of being an FBI agent. Couldn't get in (white male issue in '78 - they already had 8,000 of me).
Always liked the idea of being a railroad cop. Did it in '80-'82.
Two out of three was acceptable!

By the time I hit high school I knew I wanted to be a police officer. Well after the USMC it happened. Yep it happened for 30 great years. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Regards to all at GT.
